Supreme Novices Hurdle Tips 2020 – Cheltenham 1.30pm Tuesday 10th March
The Cheltenham Festival curtain-raiser at 1.30pm on Tuesday 10th March represents one of the trickiest betting heats outside of the handicaps all week but you can use our help and see the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle tips for the 2020 renewal below.
The first race of the Cheltenham Festival is always one of the biggest betting heats of the year and the 2020 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle will be no different.

Cheltenham 1.30pm Tips
The market is headed by Nicky Henderson’s Shishkin who at 11/4 seems well found and, although he could be anything, has beaten very little to date having yet to run in a graded race and at the prices can be opposed.
The Irish challenge is led by Gigginstown’s Abacadabras whose only defeat came against potential superstar Envoi Allen, however, a tendency to throw in a sketchy jump or two in a contest like this is enough for him to be looked over.
Slightly further down the betting sits the Colin Tizzard trained Fiddlerontheroof. Despite a slightly slow start to his career over hurdles, with defeats to Albert Bartlett favourite Thyme Hill and a narrow loss to Edwardstone, he has since come into his own with two authoritative successes at Sandown. The second of these was a six-length victory in the Grade 1 Tolworth Hurdle and it is interesting to note that since 2005 only 3 winners of the Tolworth have gone on to run in the Supreme with two of those, Noland in 2006 and Summerville Boy in 2018, going on to be victorious.
For a big, strapping horse Fiddlerontheroof negotiates his hurdles in an extremely slick manner and this, coupled with a high cruising speed, is sure to see him pose a threat at Cheltenham. This speed can be backed up by the impressive time he recorded in the Tolworth which was considerably quicker than the other two-mile races run on the same card. At 8/1 and with regular jockey Robbie Power riding out of his skin this season, he seems like a very good bet for our Supreme Novices’ Hurdle tips at this stage.
Willie Mullins has an exceptional record in this race, saddling 4 winners since 2010 with a further three runner ups to boot and has another strong challenger in the shape of Asterion Forlonge.
Unbeaten in a point to point, bumper and two races over hurdles (one of which was franked by Pencilfulloflead’s 10 length win at Punchestown on 18 February) he laid down a serious marker at the Dublin Racing Festival with the dismantling of some highly thought of rivals, not least Gordon Elliot’s Easy Work. That performance was very likeable, however, it is thought that the official going description of “yielding” may have been off the mark somewhat with overnight rain and pre-race watering leaving the ground on the tacky side and he may be seen to best effect should the heavens open in Gloucestershire.
That is not to put anybody off backing him at the current best price of 7/1, however, he is a standout candidate and even though he races in the same colours as current favourite Shishkin, it is not thought that the owner will have any issue with the two clashing here.
Envoi Allen would probably be the favourite if he took his chance in this race but it looks as though he’ll go to the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle instead. You can see from our Champion Hurdle tips that he’d also be fancied to go well in the day 1 feature if he turned up to that race.
Supreme Novice Hurdle Each-way Tips
Further down the market, Edwardstone seems to be overpriced at 20/1 and one which piques my interest is Captain Guinness who has come in for a bit of money in the last few days. Though all the trends would suggest he has no chance (not enough starts/wins over hurdles and trainers record in the race) he is clearly talented. The form of his second to Andy Dufresne has taken a knock with that horse seemingly deemed not good enough for any race at the Festival but he is a horse to keep an eye on, especially if the Irish money comes.
