The first selection of the day comes in this 2m 3f Class 5 handicap hurdle and I like the look of Golden Poet (7/2) here. The son of Urban Poet travelled extremely well last time out and was only beaten by one of the form horses of the summer jumping scene in Cheltenham De Vaige – albeit by around 12 lengths.
Kieran Burke’s charge seemed to tire in the final couple of furlongs and today’s slight drop in trip will suit. The main danger will be the Martin Keighley-trained Enforcement, who ran well last time out. With Dickie Johnson booked to ride, Enforcement will no doubt put up a bold showing off a low weight.
The horse I like here is Vintage Polly (8/1) who travels well into her races but hasn’t seen them out in her past couple of outings. The form in the book so far suggests that six furlongs is the daughter of Gutaifan’s preferred trip. Let’s hope with the cheekpieces applied again and running for the first time since moving to the Rebecca Menzies yard, having been previously trained by Hugo Palmer, we can get our head in front.
This looks like a wide-open Class 5 handicap hurdle over 2m 4f as the market is currently indicating. I’m siding with Sweeping Rock (10/1) E/W here. I was impressed with the run last time out when the Sire Of Rock gelding seemed to appreciate the step up to today’s distance. The 10-year-old stayed on and was unlucky to not to get his head in front at the post. With Richard Patrick renewing the partnership and taking off a handy three pounds, I’m expecting a bold bid and see no reason why we can’t at least get in the places.
This Class 5 contest over 1m 2f again appears there for the taking I’m going to side with Alianne (9/2) NB. The three-year-old has been knocking on the door in her last couple of runs.
She ran into traffic last time and struggled to find a clear run heading for home. With William Buick jocked up, we can expect a bold showing.
The John Gosden-trained Zahratty (11/8) NAP heads the market in the Class 5 fillies’ novice stakes over 1m 2f and that’s who’s been tipped here. The Muhaarar protege looked like it appreciated the step up in trip to today’s distance last time out, hammering one of today’s market rival, Tanita, by more than 13 lengths. There looks to be plenty of improvement in this three-year-old and, if she can take to the Tapeta surface at the Essex circuit, then she holds strong claims.
