Horse Racing Tips for Today

Cyrname is expected to start at very short odds in a small-runner field declared for the Betfair Ascot Chase on Saturday, but there are other competitive races elsewhere for which there are decent betting opportunities. The Grand National trial at Haydock is one such race while there is also a decent hurdle event on the same card. For this preview, those two contests are supplemented by the Kingwell Hurdle from Wincanton and the Reynoldstown Chase from Ascot. All four races are set to be televised on ITV.

Sodexo Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase Tip – 1.50 Ascot

For this Grade 2 chase staged over three miles, Nicky Henderson will be hoping that Pym can build upon a comfortable success at Cheltenham during December with the 7-year-old gelding now seeking a three-timer. Beaten on his debut over fences, he has appreciated the extra distance in his last two races. You can see our Cheltenham Festival tips for next month and the latest odds for the big races.

There will also be decent opposition in the race with Two For Gold aiming to extend a three-race winning sequence over fences. Favoured by soft going, the Kim Bailey trained gelding gives the impression of just doing enough to win and there may be more to come.

Sam Brown is another horse unbeaten over the larger obstacles after winning at Lingfield and Haydock last month. He raced in small-runner fields in both starts but was clear of the opposition in both events.

There was also much to like about Copperhead when he won the Mandarin Handicap at Newbury last time back in December. Trained by Colin Tizzard, he is an improving horse but does tend to idle when in front.

Tip – Copperhead to win (11/4 888Sport).

Unibet Rendlesham Hurdle Tip – 2.05 Haydock

Staged over three miles, this Grade 2 hurdle could be an opportunity for The Worlds End who won the Marsh Hurdle at Ascot last time in difficult underfoot conditions. Prior to that victory, he was seven lengths adrift of Paisley Park in the Long Walk Hurdle after winning on his seasonal reappearance. He has returned to staying hurdle races after novice chasing last season.

Another horse reverting to hurdling is West Approach after racing in several graded chases this year and then pulling up in the Welsh Grand National. He was beaten by Paisley Park in three outings last term but he will arrive here after a near two-months break.

Emitom may also be worth considering after finishing second behind Champ in an Aintree novices’ hurdle last season and he is probably a better horse than his sixth-placed effort behind Summerville Boy at Cheltenham last month.

Tip – The Worlds End to Win (11/8 888Sport)

Betway Kingwell Hurdle Tip – 2.45 Wincanton

An interesting challenger in this Grade 2 hurdle over two miles will be the Paul Nicholls trained Quel Destin who won a Listed event at Sandown earlier this month when beating Call Me Lord. He claimed a five-timer last season before finishing fifth in the JCB Triumph Hurdle and should be respected at this distance.

Opposition will be provided by Song For Someone who has been running creditably in decent handicap company especially when just failing to beat Thomas Darby at Ascot last month. Ground conditions should not be a problem as is the case with Ch’tibello who is versatile on most surfaces.

The 9-year-old gelding was beaten by Epatante at Kempton on Boxing Day and was a close third behind Call Me Lord on a previous outing when carrying 4lb more weight than the winner. Finishing third in the Aintree Hurdle last season was another decent effort.

Tip – Quel Destin to Win (7/4 888Sport)

Unibet Grand National Handicap Chase Tip – 3.15 Haydock

In ground which is expected to be extremely testing, Elegant Escape will carry top weight in this 3m4f Grade 3 contest, although the Colin Tizzard trained gelding does have a preference for softer or worse conditions. Third in the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury earlier this season, the 2018 Welsh Grand National winner was a creditable sixth in this season’s renewal and will not lack for stamina in this gruelling contest.

Opposing the top weight will be Yala Enki with Bryony Frost set to carry 5lb less and a winner over a similar distance at Taunton last time. Now with Paul Nicholls after moving from the Venetia Williams yard, the 10-year-old was third in the Welsh National and meets Elegant Escape on similar terms for an eight-lengths beating. Heavy ground will suit for the 2018 winner of this race.

Among the lower weights in this contest is Lord Du Mesnil from the Richard Hobson yard and a horse seeking a four-timer. Having won his last two contests at Haydock, his connections will be confident of a bold showing from this mudlark.

There will be further confidence behind the chances of Vintage Clouds who returned to form with a vengeance on his latest appearance when beating Definitely Red at this course last month. He is improving with every race this term.

A test of stamina will also favour The Two Amigos who is well-treated at the weights whereas the lightly raced Steely Addition raced behind Santini is his only start this season but he is unproven over this distance.

Tip – Yala Enki to Win (9/2 888Sport)
