Will Altior win the 2020 Queen Mother Champion Chase?

Altior got back to winning ways in his final prep run before the 2020 Cheltenham Festival, and now he is back towards the head of the Champion Chase betting odds – but can the superstar retain his crown this March?

After getting beat by Cyrname at Ascot in November, it took a long time for Nicky Henderson to get his stable star right again. But after the win at Newbury in which he scooted clear in the final 2 furlongs, all roads now point to the 2020 Cheltenham Festival and another crack at the Champion Chase.

Altior went off 1/3 favourite for the Newbury face and everybody expected him to win. He hit his usual flat spot and almost touched Even money in running, but Nico de Boinville cajoled him along and there was only one winner after the final flight.

“It will have done his confidence the world of good,” was Henderson’s instant verdict. “It was not nice at Ascot and it took a lot of getting over.”

What are Altior’s Cheltenham 2020 Odds?

Before the Newbury race Altior was best odds 4/1 to win the Champion Chase at Cheltenham, but those odds have now almost halved and Altior is at odds of 9/4 to win the 2020 Queen Mother Champion Chase.

Defi De Seuil remains the favourite at 2/1 and impressive Dublin Racing Festival winner Chacun Pour Soi is best odds 3/1 with Unibet.

It looks set to be a fascinating renewal with Altior expected to come on for the Newbury run again.

The tactics of the race could also be important because Defi De Seuil is known to have a similar turn of foot to Altior, so if he can kick-on during the expected Altior flat spot, you could see some action on the live in-running odds on the Betfair Exchange.

Defi also has an entry into the Ryanair Chase but it would be a real shame if any of the three horses at the top of the betting didn’t show up. Anymore positive news ahead of the Festival from Seven Barrows would surely see Altior go off as the favourite for the Champion Chase.

Is Altior running at Cheltenham?

After the weekend win at Newbury, all roads now point to Cheltenham for Altior. Barring any set-backs, he will run at the 2020 Cheltenham Festival with Nico de Boinville taking the ride.

The race Altior will run in at the 2020 Cheltenham Festival is the Queen Mother Champion Chase, due off at 3.30pm on Wednesday 11th March.

Will Altior win the 2020 Champion Chase?

His class is undoubted, and if he comes on for his prep-run, he has every chance of winning the Champion Chase again.

Following the Newbury race, De Boinville said: “His turn of foot from the last to the line was devastating. I think he’s still slightly feeling the effects of that [foot] abscess from Christmas but it’s more a confidence issue than anything else. His jumping will get slicker, so there’s plenty more to come.”

His jockey also spoke to Nick Luck about the performance and his chances at the Cheltenham Festival:
