FRIDAY CHELTENHAM NOVEMBER MEETING TIPS
1:10 Cheltenham Tip – Lycetts Insurance Brokers Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle (Challenger Stayers’ Hurdle Qual) Cl3 (3yo+ 0-125) 2m5f
BECTIVE ABBEY (8/1) might be worth chancing on his reappearance, given Nicky Henderson’s charge has won on the back of a break before, and the dual-winning hurdler could go close.
The Mahler gelding struck at Ffos Las back in April, beating Ninth Loch after which he was switched to chasing, where he ran respectably despite finishing a well-beaten second behind Do No Wrong. That run did come over an extended three miles, however, which might have stretched his stamina.
Now returning from more than five months off the track, he is back over the smaller obstacles for this reappearance, as well as dropping in distance which should suit him. The form of his Ffos Las victory has been franked by the third horse winning twice since, and Freddie Gordon takes off a valuable 3lbs so he looks to hold decent claims at the weights.
Assuming he’s race-fit, then the Seven Barrows representative ought to run well here, and it would be no surprise to see him in the mix.
1:45 Cheltenham Tip – Unibet Middle Distance Veterans’ Chase Series Veterans’ Handicap Chase (Qualifier) Cl2 (10yo+ 0-150) 2m4f
GUNSIGHT RIDGE (4/1) might have won here twelve months ago on his return when falling in a race won by Matata, and he might still have been feeling those effects when he disappointed at Kelso next time. However, Olly Murphy’s charge could get back on the winning trail here on his latest return.
The Midnight Legend gelding is still relatively lightly-raced for a veteran, and he bounced back from that Borders disappointment to land a decent handicap at Sandown before posting a very respectable fourth behind Sans Bruit at Aintree when last seen.
That represents decent form given that both the winner and runner-up have won valuable prizes since, and he seems best when fresh. He was once considered a potential Graded performer, but he hasn’t quite hit those heights, although he is very capable off this mark of going close, assuming the longer trip here doesn’t catch him out.
2:20 Cheltenham Tip – Sun’s “Save Our Bets” Novices’ Chase (Listed Race) (GBB Race) Cl1 (5yo+) 3m1f
None of this quintet can be ruled out, but DOUBLE POWERFUL (4/1) could be the answer after his promising chasing introduction here last month, and Neil Mulholland’s charge could have more to offer in this sphere.
The Ocovango gelding developed into a prolific winning hurdler last term, winning six straight, which included a victory on this card twelve months ago and he rounded off his campaign with solid third-place finishes in valuable handicaps at Kempton and Aintree, where he was only beaten around one length each time.
There was a lot to like about his chase debut here last month when finishing third to Zurich, beaten around two lengths, not helped by some early mistakes. However, his jumping improved as the race progressed, and this further step up in trip could yield another level of improvement.
2:55 Cheltenham Tip – Shloer Chase (Registered As The Cheltenham Chase) (Grade 2) (GBB Race) Cl1 (4yo+) 2m
This race has been a stepping stone for JONBON (5/6) for the past couple of seasons, and Nicky Henderson’s charge can take this prize again at the expense of L’eau Du Sud.
The Walk In The Park gelding won this race twelve months ago and added two further victories to his CV at Sandown and Ascot before being beaten in the Champion Chase back here in March, where he was demolished by Marine Nationale.
He didn’t help himself with a bad mistake mid-race, which is a tendency he can display on occasion, and he’s never fully convinced around Cheltenham despite boasting two wins here, although it is questionable whether he’d have beaten Barry Connell’s charge in any case, given how well that one won.
Having got back to winning ways at Aintree, he again tasted defeat at Sandown when beaten by Il Etait Temps, but if on song here, then he could hold too many guns for rivals. He has a very good record fresh, has a decent record here and acts on the ground; assuming he can avoid his occasional jumping howler then he ought to win this prize again.
3:30 Cheltenham Tip – Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 2) (Registered As The Hyde Novices’ Hurdle) (GBB Race) Cl1 (4yo+) 2m5f
A Galway winner on his hurdles debut, WELONLYHAVEDONE (11/2) looked set to double up back at Ballybrit last month when falling at the last hurdle; but Gavin Cromwell’s charge is taken to quickly bounce back and the Diamond Boy gelding can regain winning ways.
A winner in the point-to-point sphere for Rob Clancy before joining this yard, he has only raced at Galway since joining his current yard, but he was impressive in scoring on his hurdles debut, where he struck by twelve lengths, and he travelled well into the race before crashing out when challenging over the last, where he likely would have won.
This step up in trip could bring about further improvement and he could have a big say in proceedings here.
4:00 Cheltenham Tip – Valda Energy Novices’ Handicap Hurdle (GBB Race) Cl3 (3yo+ 0-125) 2m½f
JACK HYDE (12/1, EW) finished fifth behind reopposing Fortune De Mer when the pair clashed here last month, but on these revised terms and with the services of a good conditional in the saddle who is 2-2 on him then it might be worth chancing Fergal O’Brien’s charge to reverse that form.
A winner at Newton Abbot on his return, the Soldier Of Fortune gelding posted a creditable effort to finish fifth in the Persian War Hurdle prior to his latest run here, where he filled the same spot behind Dan Skelton’s rival.
He was only beaten around three lengths, but the pair clashed off level weights, given it was a Graded race, and now the pair meet again, this time in a handicap where the selection is better off at the weights. With his rider’s claim also factored in, he has a 7lbs pull for his defeat last time, and that ought to make him competitive, so every chance he can produce a big here to make the frame.
