Sheffield United vs Sheffield Wednesday predictions and betting tips for this week’s Friday night Steel City derby. See our match preview and free predictions below.
The two Sheffield clubs face off at Bramall Lane on Friday for the second Steel City Derby of the season. Last time out it was an exciting fixture in which the Blades led 2-0, the Owls managed to pull it back to 2-2 but they were quickly shut down as the Chris Wilder’s men ran out of Hillsborough 4-2 winners. Things have changed since September, when they last played, United were sixth and climbing the table, Wednesday were ninth and staying in and around that area. Since then United have been up to the top two and all way back down to their current position of seventh after a terrible run of form, things have got even worse for Wednesday, they currently sit 16th.
Owls ex-head coach Carlos Carvalhal left them on Christmas Eve and things looked like they might pick up under caretaker manager Lee Bullen after his men won 3-0 away at Nottingham Forest but this proved to be more because Forest were bad rather than Wednesday being good. He didn’t win another game before Dutch manager Jos Luhukay took the reins. The Steel City Derby will be his first game in charge. See our Steel City derby predictions and betting tips.
Sheffield United may be in bad form but they are certainly not a bad team by any stretch of the imagination and if it wasn’t for the Owls appointing a new manager I would not hesitate to pick them to win for my Steel City derby predictions. The new boss may just be the lift they need to get something from the game. Unfortunately for them, I can’t see them having the quality to find a win with all the first team injuries. The sides are actually very level on form despite the league table difference. United have picked up one win, a draw and three losses from their last five games, Wednesday have also had one win but four losses. I think the game will have a few goals but almost certainly I can see a draw coming. Luhukay is a very experienced and strict manager who’s knowledge of derbies in Germany should help him here. The first of our Sheff United vs Sheff Wed predictions is for the match to end a draw.
Three of the Owls last five games have gone over 2.5 goals, only two of the Blades last five have done this but based off of the last time they played I think this one will go over. Three of their last five meetings have seen over 2.5 goals and I expect this to be no different. Over 2.5 goal looks like good odds and is the second of our Sheffield United vs Sheff Wed predictions.
32-year-old Leon Clarke has had a rather uninspiring career before joining the Blades. He moved around a lot and couldn’t really find good form or settle at a club. This season he has hit spectacular form, scoring fifteen goals so far, including two against his old club Sheffield Wednesday in September. His form has slipped slightly along with United’s, but he scored in the last game against Derby and I expect him to score Friday. Leon Clark to score anytime completes this week’s Sheffield United vs Sheffield Wednesday betting tips.
New signing Ryan Leonard is eligible to play as well as on loan James Wilson. Lee Evans is unlikley to take part and David Brooks is a doubt due to injury.
Owls star man in midfield, Sam Hutchinson, is ruled out after a fracture was discovered. He had just come back from an injury. First team players Fernando Forestieri, Kieren Westwood, Gary Hooper, Tom Lees, Kieran Lee, Barry Bannan and Steven Fletcher are all still out injured.
United have won two of the last five meetings between the sides, Wednesday have won just once and they have shared the spoils twice. Last time out the Blades won 4-2 at Hillsborough but the last time they faced off at Bramall Lane it was a 2-2 draw. Three of the last five meetings have seen over 2.5 goals and four of them have seen both teams score.
