Brentford were a decent outfit under Dean Smith last season before eventually fizzling out and losing to Blackburn on the final day of the season. They have added Ollie Watkins from Exeter who should shape into a superb talent and he is joined by Neal Maupay who scores for fun in France and Luke Daniels who provides competition between the sticks. They scored plenty of goals last season with Jota and Lasse Vibe still employed by the club and they should help fire the Bees up the table. Bristol City have lost Lee Tomlin and many fans are still not convinced by Lee Johnson. They had a topsy-turvy campaign last year but don’t look much stronger this time around. They finished six places and ten points behind the West London side last year.
Cardiff look to have recruited sensibly this summer and Neil Warnock’s side look good for a top half finish once again which is another of our Championship predictions for the new season. They got off to a terrible start last season but rallied to finish 12th in the final standings. Lee Tomlin, Nathaniel Mendez Laing, Callum Paterson and Danny Ward all look savvy additions and will bolster an already impressive squad. I hate to keep writing off Bristol City but they are highly unlikely to finish above their near neighbours based on the summer transfers and they finished eight points below the Bluebirds last year.
Reading went well under Jaap Stam last season and reached the play-off final before losing on penalties to Huddersfield. The Dutchman will once again have his side well organised and they will be difficult to beat particularly at the Majeski. Sunderland have seen their squad decimated over the summer and Simon Grayson will be aiming to replicate his success at Preston in the North East but there are plenty of issues behind the scenes. The Royals appear to be in decent shape and one or two more additions will surely help them challenge the top six once again so we’re betting on Reading to finish higher than newly relegated Sunderland.
Ipswich have made some decent additions this summer with Emyr Huws, Tom Adeyemi and Joe Garner all joining the Portman Road club. Mick McCarthy’s side will be aiming to better their 16th place finish this season as they cast their eyes towards a top half finish. They have lost Tom Lawrence but should be strong enough to finish above the Lions. Millwall are fresh from League One and Neil Harris’ side may have to fight a relegation battle to avoid an instant return. They have added James Meredith and George Saville but away from the Den they might struggle.
Brentford to finish higher than Bristol City – 4/5
Cardiff to finish higher than Bristol City – 4/5
Reading to finish higher than Sunderland – Evens
Ipswich to finish higher than Millwall – 4/5
