After Crystal Palace’s dramatic win in the play-off final at Wembley they have been ‘rewarded’ with the tag of favourites to be relegated in the 2013/14 season. Coral make Palace the 4/7 favourites to drop straight back to the Championship and fellow promoted clubs Hull City (8/11 with Boylesports) and Cardiff City (6/4 with Bet365) make up the top three in the relegation battle.
Elsewhere Norwich are a best price 11/4 with Bet Victor to drop into the Championship next season and Mark Hughes’ new club Stoke are 7/2.
After their struggles last season the bookies think Sunderland (6/1) and Aston Villa (8/1) could be there or there abouts again next season but in what is a wide open betting heat thereis little to separate no less than seven teams in the relegation betting. Between Sunderland (best price 6/1) and West Ham (best price 9/1) sits over 1/3 of the Premier League teams in next seasons relegation odds.
Alan Pardew is expected to sort out Newcastle’s problems of last season and bookies make them a best price 14/1 to be relegated with David Moyes’ former club Everton a 33/1 chance.
With a busy summer ahead these odds will change, probably dramatically, throughout the transfer window and before the Premier League kicks-off in mid-August but there could be value in taking the early prices about a team getting relegated, if they fail to strengthen their odds could plummet.
Early teams of interest in the ‘to be relegated’ betting market? Sunderland, Stoke and Southampton.
