Exeter vs Macclesfield Preview

Exeter’s form was a little inconsistent last season, but they did win enough games to propel them into the top half. Matt Taylor will go into his second season as a much wiser coach, and optimism remains high in Devon. They’ve signed well this summer with Nicky Ajose a potential star at this level if he can find the enthusiasm to play to a high standard for the next ten months. Gary Warren was a rock at the bottom for Yeovil last season, when he wasn’t injured, whilst Tom Parkes knows his onions at this level. Nigel Atangana is another player who spent too much time on the sidelines last season, but he is a underrated midfielder who can break up play at regular intervals. Exeter’s squad is not massive, so keeping these key players fit will be pivotal to their chances this campaign. There should be a decent crowd inside St.James’ Park for this opening fixture, and they will expected to get the better of a side who narrowly avoided relegation in May.

Macclesfield avoided the drop last season by picking up a number of important draws and narrow victories during the latter half of the campaign. Credit must go to Sol Campbell for his hard work as he helped Macc become harder to beat, and difficult to break down. They still lack some star quality, and the departure of Scott Wilson is certainly a negative. Discussions continue with Elliott Durell, whilst there have been financial issues dogging the club for some time. Once again, the Silkmen have been tipped for relegation, and once again, they’ll be hoping to defy those expectations. They lost just two of their last ten games at the end of last season with each of those two defeats coming away from home. It’s a long journey for the first day of the season, but Macc will be aiming to give their dedicated fans something to celebrate in the Devon sunshine.

Exeter vs Macclesfield Betting Tips

Exeter will be expected to win this game, and at the time of writing (July 25th), they are odds-on with most bookmakers. Betway have them priced up at Evens, and I do believe that the Grecians will become shorter over time. Exeter only drew two of their last 15 home matches last season, and they were very much an all-or-nothing side at St.James’ Park. They have recruited well, and still have talented players such as Nicky Law and Ryan Bowman in their squad. The home side should win this game, but don’t expect it to be a walk in the park.

I’m expecting Ryan Bowman to play an important role for Exeter this season, and he will be hoping to get off the mark at the first time of asking. He scored five times in his last seven games at the end of the 2018-19 season, and he should be able to carry on where he left off. Although he’s a selfless striker who will never stop running, he’s also found his scoring tough at this level.
