Accumulator Odds – 20/1 with Ladbrokes.
In their prior game at Highbury, Fleetwood led League One leaders Portsmouth 2-1 before being reduced to ten players early in the second half and eventually losing 5-2. The Cod Army had previously won three successive league games on home soil without conceding a goal, and they now host this FA Cup tie with a Wimbledon team beaten 2-1 at Portsmouth on New Year’s Day. Although the Dons have enjoyed a mini-revival under the management of Wally Downes, they have avoided defeat in just one of nine previous league games on their travels, and a home win is predicted for this weekend’s football tips.
A poor defensive performance proved costly for Peterborough as they were beaten 2-0 on home soil by struggling Scunthorpe on New Year’s Day, and Posh registered just one clean sheet last month when winning convincingly at Accrington Stanley. An FA Cup tie at Middlesbrough now awaits with the hosts tending to earn their league victories in recent weeks against teams in the lower half of the Championship table. Boro can be an inconsistent outfit but with a fairly reliable defence, they can progress into the fourth round of the FA Cup.
During another dismal performance in front of their home supporters, Yeovil suffered a 4-1 defeat by Cheltenham on New Year’s Day with their only goal arriving via a deflected direct free-kick. The Glovers have earned just one point from their last four matches at Huish Park and now host this League Two clash against a Bury team emerging as contenders for automatic promotion. Although the Shakers are not the most consistent team on their travels, they have failed to find the net in just one league game since the beginning of November and are capable of collecting all three points for our accumulator this weekend.
Having earned four National League points from playing Aldershot twice over the festive period, Maidenhead must wish they could play that team every week as they lost each of their other league games during December. The Magpies have also failed to find the net in four of their last five matches and face the long journey to Gateshead with the hosts unbeaten at the International Stadium since the beginning of October. A third win in four home matches is predicted for the Heed.
Although they completed a 1-0 win at fellow strugglers Maidenhead over the festive period, Braintree have not won any other National League fixtures since the beginning of November with eight goals conceded in two recent defeats by Ebbsfleet. Hosts Halifax lost just one league game during December when conceding a very late goal in a 1-0 home defeat by Sutton, but the Shaymen have also netted late strikes to claim four points from recent encounters with Harrogate. Halifax can be an inconsistent outfit but they should overcome basement team Braintree.
