Everton vs Liverpool Preview – An Everton Perspective
The Merseyside derby gets us underway on Sunday and it would be rude not to write up a totally ‘unbiased’ preview of the match with some predictions, if you don’t know I am an Everton fan by now you will in about 5 minutes time.
Everton are sweating on the fitness of Fellaini ahead of Sunday’s clash with the other lot and his inclusion could be absolutely critical to nulling the effect of Joe Allen’s 1,483 successful sideways and backwards passes that makes him the best midfielder on the planet, and Steven Gerrard’s driving runs from midfield (at the speed of a tractor reversing up a hill).
Steven Pienaar will be a huge loss to the Blue side of Merseyside but Liverpool’s lack of anything that resembles a decent full back should mean David Moyes doesn’t sweat too much given that Leighton Baines will still be his marauding self down the Liverpool right, forcing Raheem Sterling on top of Glen Johnson and who knows, he might have another kid before the 90 minutes is out.
If Fellaini is fit and Darren Gibson is still out as expected Moyes will have some big selection decisions to make that could ultimately sway the tide in this clash. That is of course unless the referee sends of an Everton player for a fair but firm tackle like 12 months ago, Jack Rodwell. Felli could start in front of the back four, or in behind Jelavic up front with Osman or Guaye taking the left hand side in the absence of Pienaar and Mirallas again deployed down the right. That will probably mean Phil Neville plays the anchor role, picking up the Uruguayan diving extraordinaire when he drops deep to get the ball because all his team know they won’t get it back if they pass to him.
About Luis Suarez, he dives a lot, cheats a lot, moans a lot, shoots a lot and sometimes scores. There is no doubting his ability on the ball is unbelievable at times but it is just a shame everything else he does makes him what he is, a ‘fill in the blank’. It was fitting last weekend at Anfield when the Norwegians on the Kop partied like they had won the league (they hadn’t) when Suarez got a free kick. He dived to get that free kick you know. Just for the record Liverpool fans, your party was nothing compared to the Goodison Park riot we promised when Toby Hibbert scored.
Steven Gerrard is still a decent player and he tries to ‘stick one on’ a few Everton players in this fixture, a bit like he does to DJ’s when they don’t play the right Spice Girls track. He normally gets away with such things because of who he is so expect him to be booked, but not sent off.
Pepe Reina is an injury doubt for the clash and that is neither here nor there for Everton fans, he isn’t the best anymore and he might throw the ball in the air again, D D D D, Andy Johnson.
So back to the Blue half, a solid back four and goalkeeper will have to be protected well by whoever gets the anchor role and with Jelavic a real goal threat up front Everton will get on the scoresheet you would think. Moyes’ midfield selection will be the difference for the Blues in this fixture, get that right and the Blue half of Mersyside will have one hell of a night in the City center on Sunday. Get it wrong, and we will have to settle for a point.
