Football Betting Tips for the Last Day of the Football League Season

We’ve asked our resident Football League tipster to pick out his best three betting tips for the last weekend of the season.

There’s are finishing positions to be resolved up and down the country and we’ve picked out some of the best bets from across the fixture list on a nervous (and hopefully sunny) final weekend in the Sky Bet Football League.

Both Hull and Derby to win and maintain their 4th and 5th positions. Double pays 2.7/1 with Betfair.

There’s a private fight between Hull and Derby in the Championship as they tussle for 4th and 5th place. It doesn’t sound like much of a spar, but 4th place would guarantee a home leg second and an advantage. As things stand, Hull are two points ahead of Darren Wassall’s side and I think it will stay that way. Both sides are at home, where they are stronger, particularly Hull. The Tigers face Rotherham, who came undone last week and look to be winding down for the summer. Steve Bruce’s side have only lost once here all season and conceded just 11 goals. They recently kept a clean sheet against a resurgent Brentford side and I think they’ll collect all three points here. ]

As for Derby, they performed well on Monday afternoon, holding Brighton to a 1-1 draw and can be considered unlucky not to have come away with all three. They have the firepower to hurt any side and will be gearing up for the play-offs, so there should be no complacency. They host Ipswich, who squeezed past MK Dons at the weekend, but still look vulnerable. They’ll be hoping for a better season next time around and Big Mick is trying out a few of the younger players as they head to the beach for the summer months.

Both Hull and Derby to win. 2.7/1 with Betfair.

League One

Scunthorpe to make the play-offs (7/5 Ladbrokes).

The final play-off place is up for grabs in League One and there are three clubs contesting for the position. Grabbing 6th place would mean a clash with one of Bradford, Millwall and probably Walsall. Barnsley had the chance to cement their position last weekend, but were undone by a 98th minute Tom Lapslie equaliser which stunned Oakwell. They lead the way on 71 points and with superior goal difference, but they face a tricky trip to Wigan. They could get lucky, the Latics have already achieved promotion and could be here to make up the numbers. But in front of their own fans, you’d like to believe they would like to win the title in style and not on goal difference.

Scunthorpe have been a revelation under Graham Alexander and also sit on 71 points after their hard fought victory over Port Vale last week. They don’t have it easy either with a trip to Brammall Lane, but they are playing incredibly well at the moment and they’ll have the confidence to believe they can beat anybody. They’ve won their last five and only conceded three goals in the process and they will fancy themselves to nick that final place.

The final side in contention are Gillingham. The Gills are woefully out of form and that last minute defeat at Burton last weekend won’t have improved their confidence coming into the final weekend. They’ve won just two of their last 10 games and picked up just a single point from their last five. They have a home side, but welcome away specialists and possible play-off opponents Millwall, who will not be slacking off ahead of the end of the season lottery. They’re the only side that are playing in front of their own fans, but they have been handed a difficult fixture.

No side has it easy in their final game, but there’s always a side with momentum and currently Scunthorpe match that description. They don’t have far to travel and will take good numbers to South Yorkshire. I fancy Graham Alexander’s to nick that final spot.

Scunthorpe to make the play-offs. 7/5 Ladbrokes.

Bristol Rovers v Dagenham to be a goal-fest!

Over 3.5 match goals – 11/8 Paddy Power.

Bristol Rovers will be rueing those missed chances at Stevenage just a couple of weeks ago as they find themselves a point behind Oxford and two points shy of Accrington in the quest for automatic promotion. Oxford face a Wycombe side who rarely score more than a goal a game and have picked up just seven points from their last eight games. Although their home form isn’t great, Oxford should have enough. Accrington face Stevenage with the away side likely to cause a few problems for John Coleman’s side. Stanley are determined though and should get the job done. Bristol Rovers will be waiting in the wings and hoping that one of the above slip up.

They are a goal better off than Accrington and will be looking to increase that here against already relegated Dagenham. The Daggers have shown plenty of spirit lately and have completed back to back wins scoring six goals in the process. They will play their part in this match and are likely to find the scoresheet at some stage.

Seven of Bristol Rovers’ last eight games have gone over 2.5 with four of those also featuring four goals or more. Darrell Clarke’s side will have to go for broke and with plenty of firepower, they should grab a few here whilst Dagenham could also find spaces at the back.
