Lucky 15 Tips for Saturday 15th August on ITV Racing

ITV racing schedule

Three quality races at Newbury and an all grey affair at Newmarket provide some of the highlights of this week’s Saturday afternoon racing, with the main contenders for each contest discussed in a lucky 15 tip below.

Both the Geoffrey Freer and Hungerford Stakes are Group events while the Denford Stakes for two-year-olds was a popular race when staged under its previous Washington Singer Stakes name. All four races will be featured on ITV racing.

Denford Stakes – 1.50 Newbury

Quite a few horses are unbeaten in their only start ahead of this 7f Listed race for 2-year-olds with Guru representing the formidable John Gosden stable. After a slow start on his debut, he finished strongly to claim a very narrow victory but will have learned much from that outing.

Francesco Guardi is another colt who narrowly won his only race when winning a 7f Salisbury contest. He led on the finishing line that day and may have benefited from the experience after racing in the rear.

Dhahabi will also provide decent opposition after producing a workmanlike effort when winning a 7f Newmarket maiden on his only appearance while Jumby won a minor Ascot event despite racing keenly early in the race. He did not have a particularly hard race when winning.

GURU TO WINGURU TO WIN

Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Geoffrey Freer Stakes – 3.00 Newbury

Staged over an extended 1m5f, this Group 3 race could be an opportunity for Morando to improve upon his close second in last season’s renewal. He followed that performance by winning the Cumberland Lodge Stakes at Ascot before finishing seventh in the Hardwicke Stakes on his seasonal reappearance. That performance may be better than the bare form suggests.

The 7-year-old gelding faces opposition from Alignak who was narrowly beaten in a Haydock Listed contest last time. However, his only two career victories have been secured on artificial surfaces and this race also represents a step upwards in grade.

Not many horses have been busier than Communique since the resumption of racing and despite not winning in five outings this Summer, his best performance was arguable as runner-up when competing over 1m6f in a five-runner event at York.

Among the others, National Hunt trainer Alan King will be represented by Tritonic who may appreciate this extra distance after two second-placed finishes this term whereas Hukum needs to progress from winning the 12f King George V Handicap at Ascot.

MORANDO TO WINMORANDO TO WIN

Betway Grey Horse Handicap – 3.15 Newmarket

The winner of this 6f Class 4 handicap last season, Case Key is a strong contender for a repeat performance. After an uninspiring seasonal debut, the 7-year-old then won at Leicester before finishing second at Yarmouth in a similar graded race.

There will be plenty of opposition to Case Key with Clarey Blue set to be involved and although he has yet to score in four attempts this Summer, he was beaten by a decent horse at York last time.

Another of the contenders is Buccaneer’s Vault who has yet to win at this level, unlike Endowed who won twice at the end of last season but has raced twice in higher-class company this term without being placed. A return to this grade could suit.

There is also much to like about My Style who is still a maiden but who recovered from a slow start to finish well when second at Bath in his previous outing.

CASE KEY TO WINCASE KEY TO WIN

Unibet Hungerford Stakes – 3.35 Newbury

Dream Of Dreams will be tackling this 7f distance for the first time in two years after campaigning at 6f more recently. Facing Group 1 opposition in his last five starts, he was a narrow second in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes which was a repeat of his 2019 display in the same race. He now reverts to Group 2 competition.

The other contenders include Threat who promised much as a 2-year-old but has not really fired in two starts this season. He will race over 7f for the first time since winning Doncaster’s Group 2 Champagne Stakes back in September.

There is also Surf Dancer who won a Listed contest at York last time but needs further improvement to be involved in this race, while last season’s winner Glorious Journey may be better for the race having finished ninth in Goodwood’s Lennox Stakes during his first outing since late February.
