League One team Oxford have progressed to this stage of the FA Cup by beating Rotherham and Newcastle from the Championship in the previous two rounds, but they faced a decent Southend outfit in midweek and were beaten 2-0 on home soil. The minds of the Oxford players may have been focussed on this fifth-round game at Middlesbrough with the hosts winning two home ties to date without conceding a goal. Boro have struggled for goals lately but have registered five competitive clean sheets this year, and could claim a narrow victory.
Burton did not play in midweek but suffered a comprehensive 4-1 defeat at Brighton on Saturday, and that game followed a 2-1 home win against Wolves which ended a five-game losing sequence for the Brewers at the Pirelli Stadium. Having lost nine Championship matches since the beginning of December, Burton now face a Norwich team unbeaten in six outings and now scoring goals on a regular basis. The Canaries beat Nottingham Forest 5-1 at Carrow Road on Saturday before their involvement in a 2-2 draw with Newcastle on Tuesday, and they are recovering from a dismal series of results during late autumn. An away win is predicted.
Just one point earned on the road all season and no goals scored in their last five away matches does not inspire much confidence in Rotherham when this visit Cardiff on Saturday. The Bluebirds have just completed two impressive away victories at Leeds and Derby, having recovered from a 2-0 deficit to eventually win 4-3 via a late winner at Pride Park. Cardiff have won three league games on home soil this year and a fourth is expected on Saturday.
Southend have only been beaten by leaders Sheffield United in League One action at Roots Hall since the beginning of September and after suffering an unfortunate defeat at Millwall last weekend, they responded by winning 2-0 at in-form Oxford on Tuesday evening. Visitors Northampton have recently regained form at Sixfields Stadium, but have been beaten in their latest four away matches in league action with thirteen goals conceded. A home win is predicted for Southend.
There are signs of Barrow emerging from a recent poor spell of form with the team losing just once in four matches and winning 1-0 at Macclesfield in midweek despite being reduced to ten players after an hour. The Cumbrians played nineteen National League games without defeat at one stage this term and now host a Torquay team struggling for consistency for most of the campaign and with just one league victory earned in seven outings. Torquay are not the best of travellers and are likely to lose this contest.
