England vs Italy World Cup 2014 tips and predictions for England’s opening match of the World Cup in Brazil, kicking off at 11pm on 14th June 2014.
The first match of the summer tournament for Roy Hodgson’s side is against Italy on Saturday 14th June and we have early betting tips for the World Cup opener.
With the team set to be announced on May 12th, it is difficult to fathom who may score the first English goal of the tournament, but with the humidity and the altitude playing major parts in Manaus, it is likely to be a hard fought and cagey game.
Factor in that neither side will want to get off to a losing start, goals will certainly be at a premium. Whilst Uruguay and Costa Rica will be tough games in their own rights, England will be reticent to exert themselves in the opening encounter and conserve some energy for the two remaining group fixtures. It may be enervated England performance, but with humidity lessened and points essential, the two remaining group fixtures should present livelier lions at World Cup 2014.
Italy drew two of their three World Cup group games somewhat surprisingly against Paraguay and New Zealand in 2010 whilst they have also drawn four of their last five games in all competitions. They are likely to set up defensively and perhaps nick a goal against a tiring England defence.
The Draw is priced at 21/10 with William Hill and looks the likeliest outcome of the three and makes up our first World Cup 2014 tip for England vs Italy. Draws are often commonplace in the opening games of World Cups, the first two fixtures in 2010 ended all square.
With neither side wanting to concede an early goal, defences could be on top during the opening 45 minutes. The midfield could be congested and energy will be conserved by both sides. Although Italy are possibly more adept to tropical climes, conditions will still be stifling for both squads and it could be a game of few chances. 0-0 is a decent bet for half time score. It is available at 27/20 with Ladbrokes.
I don’t want to paint the picture that fans are in for 90 minutes of insipid and uninspiring football, but I can’t help but side with Under 2.5 goals for my final World Cup betting tip in the game. England rarely get off to a flying start during games and whilst Italy will undoubtedly have firepower, I can’t see them penetrating the English defence regularly throughout the 90 minutes. It is available at 4/6 with Stan James.
I don’t want to be a harbinger of negatively, I preferably want to exude confidence that England will put in several decent performances and be one of the memorable teams in the 2014 World Cup. I just don’t think we will see much evidence of this in the first group game.
