First goalscorer betting tips and predictions for the World Cup final between Germany and Argentina on Sunday 13th July 2014.
We’ve reached the climax of the 2014 World Cup as Germany and Argentina face off in the Maracanã on Sunday. It’s not a huge surprise that either has gotten to the final; Argentina were considered as a favourite before the tournament began, and while they haven’t hit the heights that their talent suggests they could, they have ground their way through and are now just 90 minutes (or 120) from winning the cup in their neighbour’s yard.

As for Germany, they were listed among the favoured teams without being discussed hugely, but after a number of semi-finals losses in the past few competitions, they have finally broken through and are now seen as strong favourites here. It doesn’t hurt that they administered a 7-1 hammering of Brazil in the semi, but they can surely not expect any type of stroll here.
So what type of scoring can we expect for our World Cup final betting tips? After the excitement of the group stage matches, it seemed like we were witnessing a World Cup for the ages, but things have cooled off during the knock out rounds. A combination of diminishing energy and more cautious play has seen low scoring and extra time/penalties being needed to decide the winner for many matches; it could well happen again here.
However, I can’t see Germany, like Holland, curbing their recent tactics and selling out to stop Lionel Messi and Argentina’s other attackers. They will trust their defence and not always have them covered to the detriment of their attack. Meanwhile, I can see Argentina sitting deep and letting Germany dominate possession, while looking to spring a counter attack. However if you think that we’re going to see another stalemate, the No Goalscorer odds at 13/2 may tempt you.
Looking at possible Germany v Argentina first goalscorer tips for the Germans first, I have to start with Thomas Muller who has an incredible record of 10 goals stretching over his two World Cup outings, and he’s 6/1 (Ladbrokes) to improve on that and bring himself closer to making history as the top overall scorer in World Cup history. The man who holds that record now is Miroslav Klose, and while he’s 7/1, I could see Germany starting with Muller up front while Klose sits on the bench; that’s something to keep in mind when looking at the goalscorer predictions for the World Cup final.
As for Argentina, the obvious place to start is their number 10. Lionel Messi carried the team through the group stages with late winning goals, while others like Angel Di Maria and Gonzalo Higuain have stepped up to decisively strike in the knock out stages. Messi is at 5/1 (Ladbrokes) to crown his appearance with the first goal in the World Cup final, while not many others stand out for me; Aguero does not seem to be fully fit, while Higuain at 17/2 has had a poor time of it overall despite his goal against Belgium in the quarter final.
What I do like about Argentina however, is their set pieces, and with Messi supplying the ammunition, keep an eye out for someone steaming in at the back post to meet the ball. Centre back Ezequiel Garay has been unlucky not to score a number of times over the course of the competition; could Sunday be his day? He’s a massive 40/1 to open the scoring, and in such a game it could be a set piece that makes all the difference. If you’re looking to take a flyer, he’s the man to go for.
