With the World Cup in Russia taking place this summer, we thought it would be fun to try and predict the results of all the World Cup 2018 Group A fixtures.
Group A contains the hosts Russia so it will also be the scene of the opening World Cup 2018 fixture – Russia vs Saudi Arabia on 14th June 2018, kicking off at 4pm. It will be a crucial match for both sides who have matches against Uruguay and Egypt upcoming.

Uruguay are 6/5 favourites to win Group A, Russia are 7/4, Egypt 6/1 and Saudi Arabia are 40/1. If Russia don’t get a win in their first match, they could face an uphill battle to qualify for the latter stages. A positive result for Egypt against Uruguay would also see them look a great bet to top the group at 6/1. We also like the look of Uruguay and Egypt to qualify from Group A at odds of 3/1.
In our Russia vs Saudi Arabia betting tips, we’ve gone with the match being very low scoring, it would be no surprise to see it finish 0-0 if you listen to our World Cup tipster. Nerves will be jangling for the Russians ahead of their opening World Cup fixture, so it’d be no surprise to see one of the outsiders in the whole tournament causing a shock. Remember how close France came to not winning the opening match of Euro 2016 – it could really happen in Russia as well. South Africa crashed out of their own World Cup in the group stage and it would be no surprise to see the same fate fall on the Russians this summer.
Uruguay will rely heavily on Luis Suarez and Edison Cavani to get their World Cup 2018 campaign off to a strong start and they are worthy favourites to win Group A. In World Cup Qualifying Cavani finished top goalscorer in South America with 10 goals – he is an outside option for a World Cup top goalscorer prediction at odds of 33/1 (William Hill). The odds for Luis Suarez to be top goalscorer at the World Cup in Russia are 30/1 (Unibet).
Egypt will have to rely heavily on Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah just like they did in qualifying. Salah scored the penalty that secured Egypt’s place in the 2018 World Cup and the draw has been quite kind to them. Our World Cup tipster thinks they’ve got a chance of qualifying for the last 16: “Don’t rule out Egypt upsetting the hosts in the second round of Group A matches and putting themselves in pole position for a place in the last 16”.
|14/06||Russia vs Saudi Arabia||0-0|
|15/06||Egypt vs Uruguay||1-2|
|19/06||Russia vs Egypt||1-2|
|20/06||Uruguay vs Saudi Arabia||3-0|
|25/06||Uruguay vs Russia||2-0|
|25/06||Saudi Arabia vs Egypt||0-1|
Our predicted scores for the Group A fixtures at the World Cup mean Uruguay will win the group on nine points. Egypt will finish second on six points and hosts Russia will only have one point. Saudi Arabia will also have one point but are predicted to finish bottom of the group on goal difference. Looking at these Group A predictions, it is clear to see that the Russia vs Saudi Arabia match is vital in the plight for the hosts.
