World Cup 2018 Predictions Group B – Iran

Iran certainly fail to possess a rich history of well-defined international success on the World Cup scene. They aren’t exactly world-beaters by any relevant stretch of the imagination.

But as the 2018 World Cup is already rapidly approaching, with Carlos Queiroz still calling all the shots among the Iranian dug-out, could some renewed fortunes finally be on the cards?

Will Iran qualify from Group B?

Sadly, it seems as if Iran will ultimately lack what it takes to make a real name for themselves among Group B this summer. Although Queiroz’ side fared rather well from a defensive perspective last time out at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, their overall lack of attacking prowess is likely to hold them back in Russia.

With the likes of Spain, Portugal and even Morocco looking to tear them apart this summer, Iran seemingly run the risk of becoming the out-in-out whipping boys among their opening group-stage proceedings at the 2018 World Cup.

Who will be Iran’s star man at the World Cup?

Few household names admittedly spring to mind when it comes to outlining Iran’s possible main man at the upcoming 2018 World Cup. Mehdi Mahdavikia was once considered something of a star asset back in his homeland before retiring from international football in 2009, so Iran will definitely require something more if they are to eventually impress somewhat in Russia.

Former Fulham and Wolfsburg midfielder Ashkan Dejagah is one man who could possibly serve his team rather well this summer, but perhaps 23-year-old Sardar Azmoun is the real name we should all be keeping an eye out for.

The Rubin Kazan frontman already has 22 goals in 30 appearances for his nation. He has impressed whilst plying his trade in Russia previously, but it remains to be seen whether or not Azmoun is really good enough to launch himself upon the global stage.

The up and coming striker nonetheless represents something of an exciting young talent for Iranian football fans to look forward to. On the back of this mere notion alone, Iran possess at least some form of newfound positivity on the horizon.

What are Iran’s Group B fixtures?

Spain – Let’s face it, whilst Iran will be hoping to improve upon their previous World Cup fortunes in Russia this summer, Queiroz’ side seemingly lack enough genuine quality to really prove their worth against the former world champions. Even on a bad day, Spain remain remarkably hard to beat.

Portugal – The same can be said for Portugal. Although the Portuguese arguably lack the same level of reliability as their Spanish neighbours, Iran could consider themselves rather fortunate indeed should they take anything away from Cristiano Ronaldo and co. this summer.

Morocco – Again, Iran will likely have a hard time against their North African opposition among the opening group-stages. Whilst Morocco are no world-beaters themselves, the best Iran can likely hope for in this fixture is a well-earned draw for their efforts.

Iran’s World Cup Predictions

Iran remain a relatively well-drilled and organised side under the experienced leadership of Carlos Queiroz. Much of the nation’s newfound success upon the international scene has come as a result of their recently installed Portuguese manager. Yet when it comes to the fine art of scoring goals among the final third of the pitch, Iran are quite clearly destined to struggle.

They could ultimately end up finishing their international duties in Russia as one of the only sides not to win a single fixture across two World Cup tournaments. Although this team remain a tough and dogged outfit that has proven somewhat difficult to break down in the past, Iranian football fans should not be getting carried away with even their wildest expectations this summer.
