World Cup Tips – Three Outsiders to Bet on at Russia 2018

World Cup tips

Today’s World Cup tips focus on the teams outside of the top few in the latest World Cup betting and our tipster has found three selections which are worth considering before placing your bets on the 2018 World Cup in Russia this summer.

Brazil, Germany, Spain and France lead the current betting odds to win the 2018 World Cup and it would be no surprise if the eventual winners emerged from one of those four teams. However, as in 2014 when Costa Rica were denied a semi-place after losing to the Netherlands on penalties, one of the less-fancied teams in the betting could cause a surprise. Today’s World Cup tips cover the prospects of three teams other than the favourites with the potential to feature beyond the Round of 16, and also providing decent odds for appearing in the quarter-finals or further in the competition.

World Cup Outsider Tips

Uruguay

In previous World Cup qualifying competitions, Uruguay have often struggled in the South American equivalent, but they finished second behind runaway winners Brazil at the conclusion of the latest CONMEBOL section. Both Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez featured on the score sheet in their final 4-2 victory against Bolivia. Is Luis Suarez one of our World Cup top goalscorer tips?

Those two players are likely to figure prominently in Russia after enjoying successful seasons in front of goal with PSG and Barcelona respectively, and they could be supported in attack by Maxi Gomez who netted 17 La Liga goals for Celta Vigo last term.

In the midfield department, Serie A players Matias Vecino and Lucas Torreira have also caught the eye with their performances this season for Inter Milan and Sampdoria. With Atletico Madrid’s Diego Godin among others providing some solidity in defence, Uruguay could be a team to watch this summer.

Uruguay will play Egypt and Saudi Arabia in their first two World Cup matches before facing hosts Russia. The South Americans should be capable of winning Group A and could then contest a tie with either Portugal or Spain in the knockout phase. It is certainly possible that Uruguay could beat either team to advance into the quarter-finals and that’s the opening World Cup tip today.

Betfred are offering odds of 7/2 for Uruguay to be eliminated at the Quarter-Final stage and 9/1 to be knocked-out in the Semi-Finals – both of these selections are worth a punt.

Croatia

After beating Spain and then winning Group D in the 2016 Euros, it was expected that Croatia could be a dangerous outfit during the knockout phase. A fairly average display and a 1-0 extra-time defeat by eventual winners Portugal ended those hopes and extended the thought that the Croatians have never really fulfilled their potential in major tournaments.

Despite finishing third in their first ever World Cup tournament in 1998, during which they beat Germany 3-0 in the quarter-finals, two quarter-final appearances in the Euros is their best subsequent achievement. Yet there appears to be sufficient ability in the current squad for a decent performance this summer.

Although Mario Mandzukic is expected to lead the attack, he could be partnered by several players who have enjoyed decent seasons including Andrej Kramaric – the scorer of 13 Bundesliga goals for Hoffenheim this season. Ante Rebic may also feature especially as he completed an excellent all-round personal performance by netting twice for Eintracht Frankfurt in their win against Bayern Munich in the German DFB Cup final.

The Croatian defence also appears to possess a blend of youth and experience while this could be the last World Cup appearances for experienced stalwarts Ivan Rakitic and Luca Modric.

Croatia have been drawn in the same group as Argentina, Iceland and Nigeria in World Cup Group D, and it should not be forgotten that the participation of Argentina was the subject of some doubt until the last set of South American qualifiers. Despite finishing two points adrift of Iceland in their qualifying group for this tournament, Croatia were beaten by a very late goal in Iceland and they should possess the ability to seal their berth in the Round of 16.

If Croatia can win a fairly open Group D, they are likely to face either Australia, Denmark or Peru in their next match and they are capable of achieving that feat in preference to finishing in second place finish and negotiating a probable contest against France. Looking at our World Cup tips, Group D looks one of the hardest groups to predict with many tipsters not siding with Argentina.

Coral are offering odds of 9/2 for Croatia to reach their Quarter-finals before being eliminated whereas Bet Victor are quoting 12/1 for them to be beaten in the semis as per their 1998 fate.

Colombia

After winning all three of their group matches in the 2014 World Cup, Colombia eventually progressed into the quarter-finals before they were considered unfortunate to be eliminated by Brazil via a 2-1 scoreline. Bayern Munich’s on-loan forward James Rodriguez is likely to feature again in this tournament for Colombia as his country seeks a repeat of their 2014 performance, if not better.

Among the rest of the squad, Radamel Falcao will hope to follow two decent seasons at Monaco with a prominent display in Russia alongside Carlos Bacca who has netted 15 La Liga goals in a season-long loan spell at Villarreal. They are expected to be joined by Juan Cuadrado who was used as an effective substitute by Juventus during the last campaign.

Facing Senegal, Poland and Japan in a seemingly open World Cup Group H this summer, Colombia could emerge as winners after which they will contest a match against the runners-up of England’s group in the knockout phase and our England World Cup betting tips suggest that could be the home nation. The South American team, which finished fourth in the CONMEBOL qualifying section, appear to have received an arguably favourable draw and they could be earmarked for at least the quarter-finals.

It is also worth noting that Colombia beat France 3-2 in a friendly game during March at the Stade de France despite the hosts scoring the opening two goals. That victory preceded a 0-0 draw with Australia in London.

With Unibet, Colombia can be backed at 15/4 to leave the tournament at the Quarter-final stage and 10/1 for a Semi-Finals elimination.
