Alejandro Sabella will be having some headaches as he looks to name his 23 man squad tasked to go to Brazil and bring home the coveted World Cup trophy. It’s a big ask but fortune favours the South American side as no European nation has ever won the World Cup on South American soil.

Argentina qualified with relative ease, topping their group after only losing twice. The problem for Sabella is does he stick with the players that got his nation to Brazil or does he go on current form. It’s a difficult decision to make as either way some big names will be missing out on the dream all footballers have of winning the biggest football competition in the world.

Sabella will be asking himself the same question over and over again. Which Goalkeepers do I take? Sabella is known to stick to his guns when choosing his number 1. With Malaga keeper Willy Caballero out in the wilderness, despite receiving high praise for his performances, he could turn to Sergio Romero for the jersey but being second choice at Monaco his playing time is limited so questions are being asked of his form going into a pressure cooker situation. The back-ups are likely to be Mariano Andújar and Agustín Orión who both play in the Argentinean league. Both are older than Romero so does Sabella go for experience or does he go with his gut and stick with Romero?

Many teams will be looking at one Argentinean defender this summer. They will be looking to see how he fairs under immense pressure and against the world’s best players. That man is Ezequiel Garay. The 27 year old who is currently applying his trade with Benfica has been on a number of teams radars this season. The likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and even rumours of Barcelona will all be keeping a close eye on him. Sabella will be happy knowing his central defensive pair of Garay and Fernandez will be a tough pair to bypass.

One player that will be having sleepless nights is Erik Lamela. The young winger who joined Tottenham from Roma in the summer for £25.7 million has endured a difficult time this season. To date he has only made nine appearances for the North London club. A mixture of injuries and changes of manager have stuttered his start in the English game.  With competition for places fierce in midfield the young man will be hoping he will have done enough to be on the plane.

The omission of Carlos Tevez from the Argentina World Cup 2014 23 man squad looks to be the main surprise from Sabella. Tevez hasn’t played for the national team since 2011. Although Tevez has been in fine form for his club Juventus, Sabella seems to be sticking to his principles and will not take the work horse on the plane with him. Sabella along with the rest of the nation will hope it’s not a decision he will come to regret.

Sabella will be sweating on the fitness of Sergio Augero. Having started the season in top form the Manchester City striker picked up an injury against Arsenal in December and has struggled with other niggling injuries since. He has been declared fit but with just four games left in the domestic season is that enough time to get him hitting top form like he was last season and early this season?

Sergio Romero, Mariano Andujar, Agustin Orion
