England’s Predicted Squad for the World Cup in Brazil

Having finished 2013 poorly Roy Hodgson will have a better understanding of who will be in his England squad come decision time next spring ahead of the 2014 World Cup.

Adam Lallana of Southampton may have given Hodgson a few headaches with two good performances in games against Chile and Germany earlier this month.

The two encounters at Wembley also gave England’s head coach an idea who won’t be joining him in a bid to win the World Cup in Brazil next summer.

Ashley Cole has stepped up his performances for Chelsea since Leighton Baines had stolen the left-back’s position but after a mistake by Baines against Chile it will be Roy Hodgson’s decision to who plays the most in Brazil next summer but if one of these players aren’t to be in the 23 man squad then someone like Southampton’s Luke Shaw has got a lot of work to do between now and the next England friendly against Denmark.

Joe Hart also had a good game against Germany and despite losing the game 1-0 the pressure will be lifted slightly from England’s number one especially as he has reclaimed the goalkeeping position at Manchester City after a period of worrying form.

Roy Hodgson said there will not be any shocks in the squad which rules out a chance for players that are in Theo Walcott’s corresponding position in 2005.

The statement also suggests familiar faces such as Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney will also be on the plane to Brazil next summer without too many qualms.

The only position that is perhaps up for competition is in the heart of defence with Phil Jagielka of Everton and Gary Cahill of Chelsea the current favoured partnership with competition from Michael Dawson, Ryan Shawcross, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and maybe Steven Caulker if he continues to impress for Cardiff.

England are currently best odds of 25/1 to win the World Cup in Brazil next summer with Betfair.

Rickie Lambert, Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck have staked their claims in the England squad’s striking department for the World Cup with Jermaine Defoe another source of goals to be considered.

Current England back up goalkeepers John Ruddy and Fraser Forster aren’t really having a great time at the moment with Forster disappointing against Chile and Ruddy recently conceding seven goals against Manchester City however there isn’t any other English goalkeepers showing quality in England’s top division. Jack Butland is another name for a goalkeeping position but is currently on loan from Stoke City at Championship strugglers Barnsley.

Jack Wilshere continues to excel at Arsenal and will secure a place in the final 23-man squad but he will be England’s main injury concern.
