Mexico v Cameroon predictions and betting tips for today’s match at the Arena Das Dunas in the north-eastern city of Natal.

The Mexicans are at 11/8 to win, while you can back Cameroon at 14/5 or a draw at 11/5.

With the day’s difference between the opening group games, both Mexico and Cameroon will know exactly what’s required to stay in contention for qualification to the next stage.  Brazil’s win last night has helped massively for these two sides who know a win will put them in command of getting the second qualifying place.

If both teams are adventurous and seek the three points, Mexico look the most likely as they have real quality at the sharp end of the field.  With Manchester Utd striker Javier Hernandez and Villareal attacker Giovani Dos Santos, they have the firepower to punish any defensive slip.

Cameroon in contrast will rely on a strong defence with goalkeeper Charles Itandje, much improved from his Liverpool days, ready to be called upon.  They also have a top striker in Chelsea frontman Samuel Eto’o, with pretty much all their goalscoring hopes resting on him.  They will look to keep the game tight and hope that Eto’o takes a half-chance.

That is of course, if they get that far.  In what has become a quadrennial tradition, there have been disagreements over money promised to the team for reaching the tournament; will they have their minds right for the game even now since they’ve come to an agreement?

Even if they resolve this dispute, I feel that the Mexicans have just a little too much class and teamwork for Cameroon to deal with.  They are 30 places ahead for Cameroon in the FIFA rankings, and while Mexico haven’t been hitting the back of the net in huge numbers lately, losing their last two friendlies 0-1, they will surely take at least one chance.  If that happens, I can’t see Cameroon fashioning any type of reply.  Mexico to win to nil at 13/5 looks very likely to me for our first football betting tip.

This also looks like a mismatch for Cameroon in that while the defence can deal with any aerial threat or physicality, Mexico will attack with cunning and quick movement, along with the dribbling skill of Dos Santos.  I can’t see Cameroon living with that, and with Javier Hernandez being a master of finding space in the penalty area, an anytime goalscorer bet prediction on him at 5/2 is appealing.  We are going for the 6/1 hernandez scores first as our next Mexico v Cameroon betting tip.

Finally, a correct scoreline of 2-0 to Mexico looks logical to me if my prior predictions play out; expect Cameroon to push for an equaliser while leaving gaps at the back.  A match-clinching goal from Mexico on the counter attack could be the result of such a tactic, and seal a huge three points in their quest to finish behind the likely group winners of Brazil.
