World Cup Betting Predictions and Tips for Group G

World Cup Group G hosts a couple of European football heavyweights in Germany and Portugal and the betting odds suggest these two are sure to qualify for the last 16 of the World Cup.

There are no surprises in Germany being installed as favourites to win group G as they come in, efficiently as ever, at 4/7 (Bet Victor) with the Portugese being their only challengers at 3/1 (Sky Bet).

Despite including Germany this group has no apparent ‘weak’ team and so picking our World Cup betting tips for this group is a tough task. There is no value in betting on Germany to win the group and the answer may well lie at the other end, where USA are Evens with William Hill to finish bottom and that could be the best World Cup prediction in Group G.

Perhaps coming in slightly short of ‘Group of death’ status, Ghana and USA have certainly proved themselves at the highest level, the former reaching the knockout stage at the past two competitions and the USA doing the same at 2002 and 2010 respectively.

Germany enjoyed the usual serene qualification while Portugal struggled to find some sort of consistency, losing to Israel and scraping a win in Northern Ireland, almost solely down to Cristiano Ronaldo. The Madrid star being central in any fully firing team, let alone one prone to the occasional stall.

Ghana and USA have both demonstrated their worth and will not be discarded lightly from the tournament; Ghana destroyed Egypt by a 4 goal margin to reach Brazil while USA defeated (though slightly under strength) Germany 4-3, a feat never to be sneered at, no doubt England would testify to that.

This leaves little to choose between the two sides in the current betting, with Ghana at 16/5 (Ladbrokes) and USA at 7/2 (Bet Victor). The two countries ties with Germany will provide good watching with personal incentives coming to the fore as the two Boateng brothers clash in a World cup again, while Klinsmann will no doubt be looking to get one over the motherland as manager of USA.

With no glaringly weak side on show in group G, we should be in for a high class showing with the likes of Ozil, Ronaldo, Donovan and KP Boateng being just a few names to watch.

The only possible weak point that could be levelled at Germany is perhaps their lack of a premier striker; Thomas Mueller is their best hope for top goalscorer at 33/1 (Betfred) and Klose’s best days are certainly past, yet their abundance of quality everywhere else on the pitch will no doubt compensate for this apparent shortcoming.

Group G promises to provide an exciting set of fixtures, with the group winner likely to be decided in the Germany v Portugal tie. Ghana and USA should not be discounted, the Black Stars fortunes may well be influenced by events at the African Cup of Nations, the timing of which perhaps not ideal for any African countries. Expect the man who is possibly the best player in the world on current form to be pivotal in forging Portugal’s success or failure.
