World Cup Predictions: Who Will be Top North American Team

World Cup betting predictions for a bet on the top North American team in Brazil this summer and the latest 2014 World Cup odds.

The North American representatives at this year’s World Cup have all drawn tough groups. Mexico, the United States of America (USA), Honduras and Costa Rica all face the realistic prospect of falling at the first hurdle and struggling to get out of their prospective groups, which makes identifying the team most likely to finish top difficult. Let’s analyse who will come out on pole position.

Mexico are the favourites to be the top North American in the latest World Cup odds at Evens with Ladbrokes. There is little surprise as to why, with Mexico enjoying the strongest squad out of the four. Not only is the squad filled with domestic players from Liga MX, but also includes talent from the top European leagues, notably Javier Hernandez of Manchester United, Hector Herrera Porto’s ‘engine’ in midfield and Bayer Leverkusen’s playmaker Andres Guardado.

Having just squeezed through World Cup qualifying by beating New Zealand in the play-off, Mexico will be keen to show the qualities they possess in their first game against Cameroon on 13th June.  With Brazil looking like the clear favourites to finish at the top of Group A, Mexico will be fighting Croatia for that second qualifying spot, making 3 points against Cameroon a necessity if they wish to progress.

The USA have been handed the hardest group out of any North American team with the daunting prospect of facing Germany, Portugal and Ghana in the duly named 'Group of Death'. However, the Americans are still 2/1 with Bet365 to be the top North American team.  Jozy Altidore remains the pivotal figure at the top of the USA’s attack, hitting some fine form under manager Jurgen Klinsmann during the qualifying campaign but it is hard to offer USA as our World Cup betting tip given their near impossible group. Despite his impressive international form, Altidore has struggled to replicate this in his performances for his club, Sunderland, in the Barclays Premier League, amassing only 1 league goal in 30 appearances. If the USA are to progress Altidore must recapture the form that he produced during the qualification campaign.

However, football is a team game and the solidity of their defence against the attacking talents, particularly within the German and Portuguese squads, will be crucial. The experience and leadership of Everton’s goalkeeper Tim Howard will be invaluable at the back as they look to spring a surprise within the tournament’s toughest group.

Recent history does no favours for Honduras’ World Cup campaigns with the team only qualifying twice, never making it past the Group Stages and never winning a single World Cup game. This dismal record looks set to continue in Brazil this summer with ‘Los Catrachos’ drawing a difficult group consisting of France, Switzerland and Ecuador. With Honduras facing potentially 3 defeats in this group, the odds of 12/1 with Bet365 to finish as the top North American team are no surprise. Names that will be familiar within their squad will include Wilson Palacios, who plies his trade for Stoke City, and Hull defender Maynor Figueroa, however it seems likely  that even they will be unable to prevent an early exit for a team ranked 30th in the  FIFA World Rankings.

Finally, Costa Rica are the bookies least likely to finish as the top North American team, with odds of 14/1 with Bet365. These highs odds come with little surprise as they have a slim chance of progressing to the next round.  In a group consisting of England, Italy and Uruguay they will struggle against the quality possessed by all 3 opponents. However, it would be wrong to underestimate Costa Rica. They have a youthful, if inexperienced squad, full of talent and flair that will be eager to impress on the big stage. Costa Rica will not roll over but are likely to find themselves struggling to cope against their much favoured opponents in Group D.
