So what are we looking for when trying to find the top onion bagger at the World Cup?  You want an easyish group, a relatively straight forward second round opponent and to be a forward. Midfielder Muller broke the trend in 2010 by taking the Golden Ball but before him the last nine all were centre forwards. At first glance there are not many that stand out but delving a little bit deeper into the market throws up three selections, two at 66/1 and a 100/1 shot.

Edin Dzeko – 100/1 with Ladbrokes

The first top goalscorer outside bet should be known to everyone and that’s Edin Džeko. The Bosnian forward scored 10 goals in qualifying and managed 26 in all competitions for City this season. He finished the season of strongly; scoring five goals in his last four matches and comes into the World Cup on the back of his best season in the last five years scoring wise. Bosnia, whilst drawing Argentina have two relatively straight forward matches against Iran and Nigeria in Group F. They should finish second to Argentina and that would mean a second round match against one of Switzerland, Ecuador, France or Honduras, opponents they are more than capable of beating. After that it’s the quarter final stage and who is to say they couldn’t go further? Given the above and the fact he’s at 100/1 with Ladbrokes, he’s our first World Cup top goalscorer prediction.

Teofilo Gutierrez – 66/1 with Bet365.

Secondly we come to Colombian hit man Teófilo Gutiérrez. The Los Cafeteros frontman won’t be known by many in Europe due to him plying his trade for most of his career in South America. He enters the top scorer at the World Cup equation for numerous factors. First up he was Falcao’s regular strike partner during the qualifying campaign and with El Tigre not yet fully fit from his knee injury he will surely be leading the line for Columbia. Secondly, during the aforementioned qualifying campaign, he managed to score on six occasions with only five other players ahead of him in the boot shooting league. Finally Columbia find themselves in a group containing Greece, Ivory Coast and Japan and they should be good enough to win this group with Gutiérrez scoring goals in the process. At 66/1 with Bet365 he’s a good e/w bet.

Pedro – 66/1 with Betfred.

Our third World Cup betting tip pick was Spain’s highest scorer during qualifying, has made himself an integral part of their set up and is getting better with age, step forward Pedro. The Barcelona man notched four times during the group stages, played in 14 of Spain’s 18 games last year and has the knack of scoring on the big occasions as goals against France and Manchester United in the Champions League final testify. Spain are sure to go far this tournament and whilst not a forward in the classical sense he can take centre stage given del Bosque’s penchant for no centre forwards. Currently 66/1 with Betfred he will keep our interest throughout the tournament and completes our outsider betting tips for an each-way World Cup 2014 top goalscorer.
