England World Cup predictions

England World Cup betting tips and predictions ahead of this summers tournament in Russia. What are the best bets you can place on England at the 2018 World Cup?

England have been drawn in World Cup 2018 Group G alongside Belgium, Panama and Tunisia and are aiming to bounce back from a disastrous tournament four years ago. We take a look at the best England World Cup betting tips and predictions and explore the possibility of the Three Lions reaching the latter stages of competition.

England World Cup History

England have just a single World Cup success to their name which arrived in 1966. As hosts of the tournament, they lifted the Jules Rimet Trophy in front of a packed-out Wembley Stadium. 98,000 spectators headed to West London to watch the Three Lions beat Germany 4-2 AET. Geoff Hurst netted a hat-trick, putting some gloss on the scoreline in the 120th minute. They’ve been unable to recreate this success since.

Prior to their 1966 success, England had featured in four World Cups, reaching the quarter-finals on two occasions. They rarely fail to qualify for the tournament although they didn’t feature in 1974, 1978 and 1994.

They are regulars in the quarter-finals, having reached the final eight on nine occasions, the latest being in 2006. They finished fourth at Italia ’90, winning three of their seven games and losing just once.

2010 and 2014 were hugely disappointing tournaments for England, exiting in the round of 16 in South Africa, failing to beat the USA and Algeria en-route. In 2014, they failed to progress beyond the group stage with Uruguay and Costa Rica heading through to the knock-out round. It was the first time since 1958 that they had failed to win a single game at the tournament.

England are 13/2 with 888Sport to be eliminated at the group stage once again.

England World Cup Qualifying Performance

England were hugely impressive during qualifying. They were drawn in UEFA Group F alongside Scotland, Lithuania, Malta, Slovenia and Slovakia.

They remained unbeaten throughout, winning eight of their ten qualifying matches and conceding just three times. Scotland’s Leigh Griffiths netted twice in two minutes from identical free-kick situations but apart from this rare lapse in concentration, the England defence held firm.

They were pretty handy down the other end of the field, netting 18 goals in total but they only netted three or more goals in a single match once (vs Scotland).

Sam Allardyce oversaw England’s 1-0 victory against Slovakia before Gareth Southgate took over and oversaw the remainder of the qualification campaign. Harry Kane finished as the team’s top scorer with five goals.

Kane is 11/10 with William Hill to finish as England’s top Goalscorer at the 2018 World Cup

Is the England World Cup Squad Good Enough?

Gareth Southgate has opted for a youthful looking squad for the 2018 World Cup and very few of the players featured in the underwhelming 2014 tournament. Harry Kane will captain the side. Jordan Henderson comes off the back of a Champions League final appearance and helped lead the Reds to a third place finish in the Premier League. He is one of the more experienced heads in the side despite being just 27 years old.

Southgate has opted to include Trent Alexander-Arnold who receives his first call-up to the national side although the Liverpool full-back is unlikely to feature much in Russia. The squad has plenty of depth although concerns over the strength of the midfield options are fully justified. The loss of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is a huge blow for England and they could be short on numbers in this central area should any injuries occur.

Many fans felt that Jack Wilshere or Jonjo Shelvey should have been included in the squad and both players would add a creative flair which may be lacking. The likes of Dele Alli and Eric Dier have a great understanding and the Spurs duo will be looking to combine with teammate Harry Kane throughout the tournament.

England’s defence looks relatively solid and they have a number of decent goalkeeping options but they may lack an extra creative option to deploy from the bench should they encounter a stubborn back-line.

For those who are feeling a little more pessimistic, England are available at 4/5 with Betfred to reach the quarter-finals and that’s one of our England World Cup betting tips for this summer. It’s 3/1 for them to reach the final four of the tournament. They are 1/7 with Sport Pesa to progress from Group G whilst they can be backed at 11/8 to finish top of their section.

How Far Will England Go at the World Cup?

England are expected to qualify from the group stage and their draw does looks relatively kind. In the round of 16, they will face a side from Group H, likely to be Poland or Colombia and that looks a winnable tie. The Three Lions should at least make it through to the quarter-finals but progressing any further could be difficult.

Depending on their position, they may face Germany in the last eight or alternatively, they may come up against Switzerland. It goes without saying that the latter would be preferable with the Swiss generally short on firepower.

England are still a relatively inexperienced squad and beating Joachim Low’s side is a huge ask. Many of the players don’t have the big-match experience to outlast the likes of Germany and Brazil and backing Gareth Southgate’s side to exit in the quarter-finals or perhaps even the semi-finals look like sensible betting options.

England to be eliminated in the quarter-finals is 9/4 with Betway.

Who Will be England’s Top Goalscorer at the World Cup?

Harry Kane netted five times during qualifying and he is set to be the focal point of this side. Southgate is likely to start the Spurs striker in every single game and he should relish playing on this stage. He will lead from the front and his performance against Nigeria suggests that he will grab plenty of goals during the group stage so he goes in as our England World Cup top goalscorer prediction,

Raheem Sterling is second in the market but the Manchester City winger lacks the composure of his team-mate. Jamie Vardy should grab a couple of goals but he may be used to stretch the opposition defence in the last twenty minutes of games. Dele Alli may find the net at the tournament but is likely to be creator-in-chief for Kane.

Harry Kane – Top England Goalscorer – 11/10 with William Hill.

Can England Win the World Cup?

In short, no.

England will give their fans plenty to cheer in Russia and will be significantly better than their last outing at this tournament but they are unlikely to reach the final. The side is still developing and there is a plenty of hope for the future but they aren’t ready for World Cup success, just yet.
