1.30pm Cheltenham – Rexham

Successful Irish raid to start the day

Day 2 of The Showcase Meeting kicks off with the 888Sport Novices’ Hurdle over three miles. Saint Palais is a very interesting runner for trainer Richard Bandey having been extremely progressive over fences last season. With an official chase rating of 153 it is fascinating to see connections switch back to hurdles to exploit his novice status. He looks the clear pick at the weights but with an uncertain amount of rain around, I’m not convinced the ground will be soft enough for him to be seen at his best. I’ve decided to take him on with Rexam 3/1 for trainer John McConnell who is a master at sending raiders over to pick up valuable prizes, including the last two renewals of this race. Rexam was visually impressive on his last start and the form has been well franked. The runner up, Toss Again, went on to win his next start by eight and a half lengths, whilst the third placed horse had finished a similar distance behind the well-regarded Champ Kiely, before placing in a good handicap. If conditions remain on the quick side, I believe he has an excellent chance.

2.05pm Cheltenham – The Hollow Ginge

Now is the time to back The Ginge

A head second in the race last year, I believe The Hollow Ginge 7/2 could be very hard to beat in this renewal of the 888Sport is Made To Play Handicap Chase. He is a horse who seems to go well fresh, and his record would suggest he is one to catch first time out. Having won off the back of 191, and 237 day break, I thought he should’ve won the race last year but he maybe hit the front a little too soon. Definite Plan chinned him on the line, but The Hollow Ginge ran off 137 that day and his mark has plummeted to 127. Officially rated 144 after a fine fourth in the 2020 Hennessy, he’s extremely well in on old form. That run came on his second start after a break, but he had fallen at the first on his reappearance that season, further highlighting how well he goes when fresh. He clearly enjoys good ground so wouldn’t want too much rain but if he is going to win a race this season, this is the one.

2.40pm Cheltenham

Follow the Piper for Profit in the Masterson Hurdle

Arguably the feature race of the meeting is the Masterson Holdings Hurdle over two miles for four-year-olds. Pied Piper 1/1 heads the betting for Gordon Elliott and I think he will take all the beating. Last seen dead heating with the reopposing Knight Salute at Aintree, he eventually lost the race after a steward’s enquiry. I don’t believe that was Davy’s finest ride and he hit the front far too soon. Having previously finished third in the Triumph, roughly 17 lengths ahead of Knight Salute, and bolted up in the Triumph Trial over course and distance, we know Pied Piper goes well at the track. Versatile in terms of ground, we don’t have to worry about underfoot conditions, and he remains the only horse to have beaten Vauban since his move to Willie Mullins.

3.15pm Cheltenham

Editeur Du Gite can defy top weight

Defending champion Before Midnight was a surprise absentee from this year’s 888Sport Handicap Chase declarations. Willie Mullins raiders are hard to ignore and his sole runner on the card, Dads Lad, commands plenty of respect. Clear The Runway has been in fine form this Summer, recording an emphatic five timer. His mark has risen to a career high one of 142 though and he has much more on his plate here. I like the chances of top weight Editeur Du Gite 7/2 who loves the track and has course form figures of 114 with the fourth coming in the Grand Annual on unfavourable heavy ground. That was a huge run and came off todays mark of 153. In calmer waters, and back on better ground, I think he can defy top weight and record a third Cheltenham success.

3.50pm Cheltenham

Take a chance on Dillon

A typically tricky Pertemps Qualifier is next up on the cards where Botox Has currently heads the betting for trainer Gary Moore. He was last seen defeating Brewin’upastorm in the Grade 2 National Spirit Hurdle and could be well treated off a mark of 140. It may be worth taking a chance on Ask Dillion 25/1 who finished just over three lengths behind Botox Has over course and distance back in December. Ask Dillion gave Botox Has 6lbs that day and the pair meet again this time around on completely different terms. Taking into account Jack Hogan’s 7lb claim, Ask Dillion will receive 11lbs from Botox Has this time around. Granted, Ask Dillion didn’t kick on last season, but the handicapper has been kind, and he should appreciate the better ground. With winning course and distance form in the book, he is a lively outsider add odds of 25/1.

4.25pm Cheltenham

Ireland can strike again

The penultimate race of the day is the Jim Wilson Memorial Novices’ Chase over an extended three miles. Chemical Energy is an interesting runner stepping up significantly in trip for Davy Russell and Gordon Elliott. I favour another Irish raider in the form of Life In The Park (11/8) for Henry De Bromhead. Having fallen at the last when 15 lengths clear in a Point To Point, Life In The Park had slightly disappointed over hurdles but finished the season with a good win at the Punchestown Festival. Sent off 11/8 favourite at Listowel for his chase debut, he did jump slightly to his right, but he was extremely accurate in the main and made quite the impression, going on to score by a comfortable four and a half lengths. In typical Henry De Bromhead fashion, he appears to have improved plenty for chasing and he can put his jumping to good use against similarly inexperienced rivals.

5.00pm Cheltenham

Fingers crossed for a Strong finish in the last

The final race of Cheltenham’s October meeting is a Bumper over an extended two miles. Milton Harris must be respected in these types of contests, and he saddles two runners, Earth Cry and Gnetle Slopes, both for owner Anwar Badri. Olly Murphy is another trainer with an excellent Bumper record, and he is represented by Strong Leader 7/2, a full brother to useful bumper winner Strong Glance. Strong Leader was seriously impressive on his debut back in May and it is interesting to see him pitched in for another bumper before presumably going hurdling. The form of his Bumper win looks okay, and I would be hopeful he can feature in the finish here.
