horse racing abbreviations

Testing conditions are, once again, the order of the day at both Jump meetings on Thursday, but there’s a full programme from Huntingdon, Sedgefield, Southwell and Newcastle.

We’ve done our level best to root out some value, wherever it can be found up and down the country.

Huntingdon: 2:10 Bet At racingtv.com Handicap Hurdle 2m

Manucci is unpenalised for winning, unchallenged, in a conditional jockey’s’ event at Sandown last week, but his previous efforts were less encouraging and he may be worth taking on at prohibitive odds. The suggestion is Astroman, who is becoming frustrating to follow, but has the form to take a hand in the finish here if putting his best foot forward.

Selection: Astroman (7/1 with Bet365)

Sedgefield: 2:55 All Weather Surfaces Carpet Gallop Handicap Hurdle 2m4f

Martha Willow has run well on both starts over hurdles so far and starts life in handicap company on a realistic-looking mark. Heavy going is an unknown, but she ran well enough on soft ground at Catterick on her penultimate start to suggest she’ll cope and stepping up in distance should do her no harm.

Selection: Martha Willow (11/4 with Bet365)

Southwell: 3:47 Betway Handicap 5f

Dark Side Prince wasn’t beaten far in a 0-90 contest at Chelmsford three weeks ago and may still be well enough handicapped to take advantage of this slight drop in grade. He remains 6lb higher in the weights than when completing a hat-trick at Wolverhampton in December, but may not have finished winning just yet.

Selection: Dark Side Prince (15/2 with William Hill)

Newcastle: 7:00 MansionBet Proud Partners Of AWC Handicap 1m

Fox Power returned to winning ways in taking style at Wolverhampton earlier this month and, having not previously won since April, 2019, remains very well handicapped. Indeed, he was making his debut for Michael Appleby, having last been seen in public in October, so he has plenty going for him.

Selection: Fox Power (4/1 with Paddy Power)
