1:50 Sandown

The first race from Sandown on ITV is the Coral Charge, a Group 3 sprint over the 5f trip.

The one for me here is RAASEL (10/1) EW. He’ll enjoy this good ground and he’s 5-8 when getting good ground which is obviously encouraging. He’s 1-1 here at Sandown when beating a solid yardstick in Mitbaahy over this trip. He ran at Group 1 Level at Royal Ascot and he was far from disgraced. This is his level and he has a lovely draw in stall 5. He’ll be able to sit just off the pace and get a clear run at them which can be an issue for many in this type of race.

2:05 Haydock

The first of three races from Haydock is the 2:05 and it’s a tricky handicap over 1m6f.

The one I like in here is PLEDGEOFALLEGIANCE (5/1). A typical Mark Prescott improver who won his maiden at Redcar easily and then followed up last time out winning a handicap at Doncaster. He stuck his neck out there staying on strongly and showed a real will to win. I think he’ll continue on a real upward curve and his current mark may well underestimate him. He’ll sit handy which isn’t a bad spot to be at Haydock.

2:25 Sandown

The 2:25 contest is the Coral Challenge, a tricky handicap over the mile with 15 runners set to run.

I’d chance SCEPTIC (15/2) EW here for the Andrew Balding stable. The 3 year-old is the least exposed horse in the race and he comes off a career best when winning going away at Goodwood last time out. He likes to be held up and there should be a strong pace on here. He’ll be dropped in from the outside stall and Hollie Doyle will hopefully get the breaks or come round the lot of them. I don’t think we have seen the best of Sceptic yet and he’s a lively player in this.

2:40 Haydock

The 2:40 race is the Lancashire Oaks, a Group 2 race for the fillies and mares over 1m4f.

It’s SEA SILK ROAD (5/1) NAP for me here. A decent winner at York last time out, she came from off the pace to win in taken fashion. That win would have done her the word of confidence and with the Haggas team firing, I think she’s the solid option in here to follow it up. The favourite has to be taken on as she has a lot to prove still in my opinion. Aristia should set a nice pace for Sea Silk Road to aim at.

3:00 Sandown

Next up is the Coral Distaff, a listed race for the 3 year-old fillies over the mile.

The one for me here is BRIDESTONES (7/2) NB. She has been highly tried since making a winning debut at Yarmouth finishing sixth in the Fred Darling on her second career start before being pitched into Group 1 company in France on her third start. For the Gosden’s to be doing that, you’d think her homework must be very strong. She had no luck when finishing mid-division in the Sandringham at Royal Ascot last time out, being short of room and getting no run. She stayed on strongly but obviously got going too late. I’d give her another chance in this.

3:15 Haydock

The 3.15 from Haydock is the Old Newton Cup, always a competitive handicap over 1m4f and this year is no different.

I’d give SCAMPI (20/1) EW another chance here. A really good winner at York, he looked a horse to follow this season. Things haven’t gone to plan in his next two starts but Epsom wouldn’t have suited and then last time out at Ayr was a strange race that’s best ignored. He stayed on well last time out at Ayr and he’s been dropped 2lb for that effort down to 90. If he’s on a going day, I expect a race of this nature to really suit. A decent size field with pace on. He’ll sit off the pace and come through the pack. The Andrew Balding team can’t do a lot wrong at present.

3:40 Sandown

The feature is the Coral Eclipse, a Group 1 contest over 1m2f. Only four runners go to post but it looks a fascinating tactical battle.

Not much value here but I’d take a small punt on the rank outsider WEST WIND BLOWS (25/1). He’s a proven winner over 1m4f so he’s the likely pace angle. Jamie Spencer is good at getting the pace spot on and he may just be able to steal it from the front here. West Wind Blows is no mug and he backed up a Group 3 victory in Longchamp with a fine second behind Pyledriver last time out. If it becomes tactical as I’d expect, this could be a messy result and West Wind Blows is no mug if getting left alone in front.
