ITV Racing Tips for Saturday 17th May from Newbury and Newmarket

12:50 Newbury
The first race from Newbury is the Group 3 Aston Park Stakes over the 1m4f trip.
I like SUNWAY in here. He was a very smart 3-year-old last season finishing second in the Group 1 Irish Derby as well as a fine third in the final Classic, the St Leger. He’s had a run this season which is likely to have blown the cobwebs away and I think he can give Kieran Shoemark a winner in the opener.
1:05 Newmarket
The first of three live races from Newmarket comes up at 1:05. It is a 7f handicap.
I think PHYSIQUE is the one to be with here. He certainly looked well-handicapped on what we’ve seen this year off a mark of 86 and it appears it’s only a matter of time until he gets his head back in front. Returning to a course and distance he’s previously won off and a run over it last time out that was a fine effort in finishing second, he’s the one they have to beat today for me.
1:25 Newbury
Next up at Newbury is the Carnarvon Stakes, a listed race over 6f.
I’d expect IDES OF MARCH NAP to take a fair bit of beating in this race. A solid 2-year-old with plenty of experience last season, he always looked like he would come forward with another winter on his back. He showed plenty of promise to be just touched off on seasonal debut behind stablemate Whistlejacket and he can now come forward again and land this. There is nothing in here that looks near the class of Whistlejacket to me.
1:40 Newmarket
The 1:40 from HQ is another 7f handicap.
The one for me is ART MARKET who comes into this in fine form. He won a course and distance handicap on similar ground last month easily and I don’t think a 5lb rise will be enough to stop him going in again. Trainer Williams Haggas is very good at improving these handicappers and I think he can do just that with Art Market.
2:00 Newbury
The 2:00 is the competitive London Gold Cup handicap. A 1m2f contest for the 3 year-olds.
I like WAVE RIDER EW in this. The Charlton yard have a fine record in this contest, so they have an idea of what it takes to land it. Wave Rider comes into this trappy race as a maiden but has shown plenty of promise in all three starts. He now takes a decent step up in trip which is likely to bring out further improvement. The first time hood should help him settle and he’s a lively each-way player.
2:15 Newmarket
The final live race from Newmarket is another handicap, this time over the mile.
The one for me is top-weight MYTHICAL GUEST who’s run two crackers on his last two starts. The first of those was here at Newmarket, finishing a good third in a competitive course and distance race here. He then finished a very close second in a similar trappy affair at Ascot when we last seen him. The handicapper has left him on the same mark and this race looks weaker. If he remains in similar form, he ought to go close.
2:35 Newbury
The final race is the feature of the day, the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes over the mile trip.
The one I like is TAMFANA NB. A progressive 3-year-old last season who arguably should have won the 1000 Guineas. She did get her Group 1 success later that year when landing the Sun Chariot Stakes. She returned to action at Sandown last month when chasing home the re-opposing Dancing Gemini. It was a run full of promise, and the winner had fitness on his side that day. With that run under his belt and now getting weight, I’m expecting a bold bid.
