1:50 York

The opener on ITV is the Strensall Stakes, a Group 3 over 1m1f.

I like BASHKIROVA (8/1) EW here in the opener. The William Haggas charge improved from her seasonal reappearance effort at Goodwood to go one place better in winning a decent race at Epsom. She then went to Royal Ascot a well backed favourite but things didn’t go to plan and she never really got into the race. She’s had a nice break since and I think she can resume improvement and get back on that upward curve. It’s a decent race but I think she looks the value in it.

2:05 Sandown

The first of two races from Sandown is at 2:05 and it is the Atalanta Stakes, a Group 3 over the mile.

Again I’ll chance one each way here and that is MISS EN SCENE (10/1) EW. She was a really promising 2 year-old operating at Group 1 level. She finished fourth in a race won by the impressive Inspiral last season and a return to that form would look good enough to take this. Things havent gone to plan this season as she’s only been on the racecourse once but this is a significant drop in grade and hopefully that run in May brought her on. She’s a big price based on her talent.

2:25 York

The 2:25 from York is the competitive Melrose Handicap for the 3 year-old stayers over 1m6f.

Another each-way selection here for me with INVERNESS (12/1) EW. There wasn’t much between him and the favourite for this Soulcombe on their run last time out at Goodwood and I think Inverness has scope to improve just as much, if not more for this step up in trip to 1m6f. Drawn in stall 1, he’ll be able to sit handy and there shouldn’t be any hard luck stories. Another great value selection in my opinion.

2:40 Sandown

The 2:40 is the Solario Stakes, a Group 3 over 7f for 2 year-olds.

The one for me is DESERT HERO (11/4) NB. She’s bred to be really good and she was just that on debut at Haydock where she bolted up. The Haggas 2-year-olds take a big step forward from their debut run to their second run and if she does, she has to prove tough to beat here.

3:00 York

The City Of York Stakes comes up next, a competitive 7f Group 2 race.

I like KINROSS (9/2) EW here. He’s a solid sort who looks an each-way bet to nothing to me in this. Arguably, unlucky last time out behind Sandrine as he couldn’t get out in the final furlong until it was too late. He still stayed on well to finish second there only beaten a neck. I think this York course will suit well and Frankie takes the reigns.

3:35 York

The feature of the week comes up at 3:35 and it is a wide-open renewal of the Ebor Handicap over 1m6f.

I’ll go with another big priced selection here in RODRIGO DIAZ (33/1) EW for the David Simcock team. In a race like an Ebor, you should be hopeful of a strong pace and that’s what the selection would relish. He likes to sit held up and pick his way through the pack. He has the perfect partner in Jamie Spencer to do just that. He’s ran well on his last two starts finishing third and second last time out behind improving Group performer Coltrane. He will be staying on best towards the finish while others may have cried enough. I think he can sneak into the places for us at least.

4:10 York

The final race is another wide-open handicap, this time it’s one for the sprinters over 6f.

I like SPANGLED MAC (9/1) NAP. We see quite often that this time of the year is the time to take the 3 year-olds against their elders as they progress quicker given their younger. Spangled Mac has improved throughout the season rattling up a four timer before a fine second last time out behind Adaay in Asia who has boosted that form with another victory earlier this week here at York. He’s drawn in stall 3 which looks ideal based on what we’ve seen this week and I really like his chances for the potent duo of George Boughey and William Buick.
