ITV Racing are covering four races from Newmarket on Friday 29th September and we have asked Henry to pick out his best bet from each race for a lucky 15 tip.

There are a total of eight races from Newmarket on Friday but only four are being shown on ITV Racing so we are focusing on those races for our betting tips.

Newmarket Tips 29th September

  • 1.50pm – Tarawa (10/1)
  • 2.25pm – Sea Theme (6/1)
  • 3.00pm – Spiritual (8/1)
  • 3.35pm – Mighty Ulysses (9/2)

1:50 Newmarket

The first race on ITV’s Friday coverage is the Rosemary Stakes, a listed contest for the fillies and mares over the mile.

You always have to respect the Irish fillies coming over and that’s why I like TARAWA (10/1) EW here for the Dermot Weld stable. She was 4th at Group 1 level behind stable companion Tarnawa on her second start this season what was a fine effort beaten less than 3 lengths. She’s ran four times since, twice at this level going off short priced favourites finishing a close second on both occasions. She wasn’t disgraced at Group 2 level either on two occasions including last time out at Leopardstown keeping on well for a never-nearer 5th. She returned to listed class again here and she looks massively overpriced to me.

2:25 Newmarket

The 2:25 race from HQ is the Dubai Stakes, a Group 3 again for the fillies and mares but this time over the 1m4f trip.

The one I like is SEA THEME (6/1) NAP for the William Haggas yard. Three careers starts to date, she’s progressed for each outing. A promising debut finishing third at Salisbury has been followed with two decent victories at Doncaster and then at listed level at York last time. She’s on a serious upward curve and I think she’ll go close entering Group 3 company here.

3:00 Newmarket

The 3:00 contest is the Rockfel Stakes, a Group 2 race for the 2 year-old fillies over the 7f trip.

At the prices I’d chance SPIRITUAL (8/1) here. A really impressive debut victory on her only career start at Leicester over this trip and despite running keen, she managed to still stay on powerfully to win by over 2 lengths. I think that racecourse experience will have done her good and she looks to open to any amount of improvement. We know the Gosden stable are masters with their fillies and at the prices, she’ll do for me in a race that is one to have the notebooks at the ready.

3:35 Newmarket

The final race on ITV is the Joel Stakes, a trappy Group 2 contest over the mile.

It’s MIGHTY ULYSSES (9/2) for me here. An exciting 3 year-old last season, he would have needed his reappearance run when finishing 5th at Ascot after a 329 day break. He then went to Salisbury and won albeit it was a dead-heat come the line. The thing I like about him is he’s just coming to the boil for the season here whilst his rivals appear to be coming here after at least four runs this campaign or in Maljoom’s case, making their seasonal return. I think Oisin Murphy will get a lovely position just off the pace and I think a bold bid will be expected here.
