2:30 Midnight Affair EW (NB) – 10/1
Quite an open renewal, but I was impressed with Midnight Affair in the Hilary Needler. Unlucky on debut behind Soprano (favourite for the Albany) she made amends when winning hands and heels, with more in hand than the official distance suggests. She has the pace for 5f but sees it out well which is needed with Ascot’s uphill finish. Clipper Logistics won this race last year with Dramatised also ridden by Danny Tudhope.
3:05 Tarrabb E/W – 10/1
In my opinion, this is a great example of Dettori being ‘Over-bet’. Tamarama has done her winning over further and her two best RPR’s have been on the AW. Crystal Caprice went through the grades last year, but I’m concerned this mark might just be too much for her to handle. My eye is drawn to Tarrabb, she beat the now 107 rated Queen Aminatu in a handicap last season before finishing 1 1/4 lengths behind Crystal Caprice who she now meets on 8lb better terms. A pipe opener around Chelmsford should put her spot on here.
3:40 Prosperous Voyage WIN – 11/4
I am disappointed Laurel has been forced out of this race, Prosperous Voyage was available 6/1 ante-post but the withdrawal of Laurel does make things easier. Jumbly is the horse to beat based on her 2nd in a Group 2 LTO having moved from Roger Charlton to JP O’Brien over the winter. Prosperous Voyage has spent many races stuck behind Inspiral but with her running yesterday this is a good opportunity for her to build on her Group 3 win latest.
4:20 My Prospero WIN (NAP) – 4/1
He ran well in the Lockinge considering he almost definitely needs 10 furlongs these days, and was narrowly beaten by Bay Bridge & Adayar in the Champion Stakes last October on ground that would have gone in their favour over his. Luxembourg stole the race from the front LTO and Bay Bridge couldn’t reel him in, I doubt he will be given such a luxury here and I do think there is a lot more to come from My Prospero this season he is relatively lightly raced and with William Haggas is hitting top form he should post a big effort.
5:00 Intellogent E/W – 10/1
One of the greatest handicaps in the calendar, won by the mighty grey Dark Shift last year, I’m heading back to last year’s race for this year’s selection. Intellogent finished 2nd at 40/1 before a 3rd to Anmaat which reads well also. He isn’t getting any younger but a winner of the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat as a 3yo shows the ability was once there and I’m hoping the return to Ascot brings out the best in him. As always it will be a cracking race and I can’t wait to watch it.
5:35 Circle Of Fire WIN – 13/2
You would have to be impressed with Gregory’s 2 victories so far but the form is yet to be truly tested. Chesspiece & Circle Of Fire have both been beaten by Military Order who ran no sort of race in the Derby but that is probably the best form on offer. My Preference is for Circle Of Fire who seemed to get caught flat-footed when the front 2 went clear but he stayed on well enough to think he will appreciate this step up in trip, especially given the nature of Ascot compared to the tight turns at Lingfield.
6:10 World Of Darcy E/W – 16/1
A competitive 2yo race that looks to lack the superstar on paper that some of the other races offer this week. But World Of Darcy is definitely overpriced considering he’s only been beaten by his exciting stablemate Elite Status in the National Stakes. As well as this, Dawn Charger who he beat on debut has gone on to win his next 2 races. Drawn right on the near side rail he should be able to stick to his task regardless of what’s happening around him and pick up some prize money.
