Staking a Claim Week 8 Betting Tips – Albert Bartlett & Brown Advisory Betting Tips 2023

Supreme Novices' Hurdle tips

We move onto week 8 of our Cheltenham Festival ante-post tipping feature called Staking a Claim and both OB and Ciaran have picked out a selection to add to their ante-post portfolio from a weather hit week of racing.

We haven’t had too many more clues to Cheltenham 2023 in Britain this week but Ireland gave us some interested races from Cork and that is where Ciaran’s pick has come from.

You can see all the existing selections in the table at the end of this article and there are also links to the write-ups for each week.

All the selections will be recorded as a 1pt win or 0.5pts each-way and we haven’t restricted the tips to any particular bet so you can expect to see singles, doubles and even the odd treble for the tips.

You can also follow both Ciaran (@murphfinbarrs) and OB (@OB_14) on Twitter where they will be outlining all of their ante-post bets and thoughts ahead of the 2023 Cheltenham Festival.

Ciaran’s Week 8 Bet

  • Hiddenvalley Lake (Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle)
  • Current Odds – 8/1 with bet365

This week, despite the lack of surviving meetings, there were undoubtedly some noteworthy performances with Cheltenham in mind. Specifically in Cork, it’s not beyond the bounds of possibility that 5 winners on the day could feature prominently come March.

And while Blood Destiny, Energumene, Arctic Bresil and Impervious all made very good impressions, it is Henry De Bromhead’s 5 YO HIDDENVALLEY LAKE that is this week’s pick.

At £200,000, it seems crazy to say but he wasn’t expensive by current Point To Point standards. He was low-key impressive in his Racecourse debut at Naas, beating a decent horse in Santonito. However, it is the run at Cork on Sunday that caught my eye. He was very weak in the betting, suggesting that maybe he wasn’t fully tuned up and coming around the turn, this looked like being the case.

But between the last 2 flights, he showed a nice turn of foot to get to the front and then found generously when extending his lead all the way to the line. He beat some smart types, (I think Letsbeclearaboutit and Cool Survivor would be competitive in the Bartlett) and I think he has the perfect run style for the race. The final circuit time also compared very favourably to Blood Destiny and Arctic Bresil, (despite running a mile further) and I have already outlined my belief that these are potential Grade 1 horses.

HDB obviously knows how to train a staying novice hurdler and the wins of Minella Indo, The Nice Guy and Monkfish in recent years point to a change in trend from the more experienced hardened horse to a classier sort. I would think that Hiddenvalley Lake could certainly fit into the second category. Watch out for this next start to be in Clonmel in February (the Minella Indo route) and if he wins there, (and with my belief that Grangeclare West will go for the Ballymore), I expect HVL to be half his current price. So I am happy to take the plunge now on this lad in the Albert Bartlett at 8/1 with b365.

OB’s Week 8 Bet

  • Three Stripe Life (Brown Advisory Novices Chase)
  • Current Odds – 14/1 with bet365

Week 8 sees me take my first proper gamble (in my opinion) in tipping a horse that may not end up in the race. So far I’ve been quite safe in selecting horses that are pretty certain to be targeted at that set race but this week has seen me go differently.

I really expected the novice chase division to be jam-packed with quality this season but with only a week to go until Xmas, it has so far disappointed me and that’s why I’m willing to take a risk. Willie still has a number of horses to make their debut over fences so still has a big hand to play but I believe the best of those will be 2–2½ milers.

My selection comes at 3m in the Brown Advisory and is THREE STRIPE LIFE. The risk is that he could be a Turners horse and we don’t get a run for our money but at 14/1 with Bet365 that is a stand-out price that I want to take. Straight after the Drinmore (after he was pulled up after a mistake) they pushed him out to 20/1 but that soon came in as a huge overreaction. I believe the 14s is still a big price on the back of just 1 mistake.

He was sent off 5/2f for that race and stable confidence must have been high considering the subsequent winner from that race also held from Cullentra. I believe Mighty Potter (that winner) and Three Stripe Life are/will be the best novice chasers in the yard and I think Gordon will split them up at Cheltenham and not want to take each other on. With Mighty Potter being impressive in the Drinmore I think he will stay at 2 ½m this season which would make me think that 3m for my selection is a realistic target.

Three Stripe Life’s form over hurdles was first class and even though he only got his nose in front once, he ran 2nd to some very good horses (Sir Gerhard, Mighty Potter). I’m adamant he will be even better over fences and even though he had a blip LTO and this selection could end up a NR, I’m willing to follow him and put confidence in his ability in a division I’m yet to be excited about.

Stake – 1pt win only THREE STRIPE LIFE (Brown Advisory) 14/1 BET365
