2020 2000 Guineas Betting Tips: 16/1 Shot Could Provide a Threat

Newmarket races tips

The 2000 Guineas is a Group 1 flat race for three-year-old Colts ran at Newmarket over the Rowley Mile and Henry has taken a look at the ante-post odds and picked out his 2000 Guineas betting tip for the delayed 2020 renewal.

This year’s renewal looks set to take place on Saturday 6th June 2020 (fingers crossed) on an exciting first weekend back since UK racing was suspended back on the 17th March due to Coronavirus.

Will Pinatubo win the 2000 Guineas?

The current favourite for the first Classic of the season is the Charlie Appleby trainer two-year old PINATUBO (10/11 William Hill) who was the Champion Two-Year-Old last year winning all six of his races including the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket.

Pinatubo is being described by many as “the best since Frankel” which is a strong comparison and if he has trained on from the age of two to three he will prove tough to beat. Pinatubo is a relatively small horse so whether he will train on as well as some of the other exciting two-year olds from last season remains to be seen. At his current price of 10/11 favourite I am happy to look elsewhere for my 2000 Guineas betting tip.

Richard Hannon Inmate could Threaten the Favourite

2000 Guineas betting tips

The horse I like in the race is the Cheveley Park Stud owned THREAT. He is trained by Richard Hannon who knows how to win a 2000 Guineas after Night Of Thunder stormed to race victory back in 2014 at a huge price of 40/1. Richard Hannon is a trainer who I’m sure will have a his horse ready to go as he is a master trainer that can get his horses fit and ready first time out in the season.

This is key for this year’s 2000 Guineas as every horse in the field bar the French contenders will be running first time out this season. He came 2nd behind the current second favourite Arizona (8/1 with 888Sport) at Royal Ascot in the Coventry Stakes last year. Threat was arguably unlucky that day staying on strongly but not quite reaching the winner. The selection then went on to win the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes at the York Ebor Meeting later in the year amongst several other good runs in high-class company.

Threat looks sure to improve from the age of two to three and at 16/1 he looks a serious each-way player in the 2020 2000 Guineas betting odds. I believe a strongly run race such as a 2000 Guineas will suit Hannon’s charge as he will get plenty of cover early on. and work his way through the pack as the race develops. The step-up in trip from 6f/7f to 1m shouldn’t be a problem and could easily bring out more improvement. His trainer Richard Hannon seems really excited about Threat this season and it is easy to see why. Hannon has also confirmed his main target is the first classic of the season at Newmarket on Saturday 6th June.

With the current situation regarding travel implications, a lot of the Irish trained horses will stay at home and wait for the Irish Guineas the following weekend. The Irish contenders are all still priced up in the market so I can see our 2000 Guineas tip being at least half the current price of 16/1 come the day of the race.
