The first selection comes up in the Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup which is a Group 2 contest over 1m 7f. The current market leader and the most likely winner is the short-priced favourite Stradivarius, who is obviously the class angle in this contest. I’m playing for place money here, though, and going to side with the Alan King-trained Trueshan E/W (20/1). The son of Planteur won’t have any problems stepping up in trip and has previously recorded a victory on heavy ground. I was impressed with the selection last time out at Salisbury when beating staying stalwart Withhold. Hollie Doyle is booked to ride and I’m hopeful we can at least trouble the places.
Next up is the Group 1 Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes ran over 6f. Again we have a short-priced favourite in the shape of the in-form Dream of Dreams who, on paper, will take all the beating here. My selection is Glen Shiel (16/1) E/W who really impressed me last time out finishing just over a length behind today’s favourite. Archie Watson’s charge’s best form has come with juice in the ground and I am confident the places with Dream of Dreams can be overturned. The selection has already won four times this season and will be knocking on the door again.
The Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes is a Group 1 event over 1m 3f. I really like the look of the Irish Oaks winner Even So (13/2) who got done for pace last time out when dropped in trip at Longchamp. The Ger Lyons-trained filly was not partnered with regular jockey Colin Keane in France but today sees the selection reunited with the Classic-winning rider. The son of Camelot looks to appreciate a softer surface and will certainly receive that in Berkshire with ground conditions expected to be touching on heavy.
The main event for me today is the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes run over 1m. I’m siding against the odds-on jolly Palace Pier and going for last year’s second The Revenant (9/2). He won with a bit in hand in last time out at Longchamp and appeared to relish the heavy conditions. The win was the selection’s seasonal reappearance and I would certainly expect the son of Dubawi to come on for that effort. With Pierre-Charles Boudot travelling over for the ride, we can expect a bold showing here.
The next selection comes up the Group 1 Qipco Champion Stakes which is run over 1m 1f. The impressive Mishriff (7/2) will benefit from being drawn high in stall 9 and looks open to further progress. The son of Make Believe will relish the heavy conditions and after 62 days off track will certainly be fresh. Another positive is Frankie Dettori selecting to ride Mishriff over trainer John Gosden’s Prince of Wales’s Stakes winner Lord North.
The final race is the Class 2 Balmoral Handicap over 1m. The Clive Cox-trained River Nymph (14/1) impressed when he travelled well into his race last time out and went clear of most of his rivals with ease. The handicapper has heavily penalised the selection for that impressive victory but I’m bullish we will be able to defy the 11lbs rise.
