Cheltenham Day 1 Tips 2020 – Tips for Every Cheltenham Race on Tuesday 10th March

Cheltenham tips 2020

Cheltenham day 1 tips for every race through the card on Tuesday 10th March. There are seven races taking place and we have picked out some win and each-way tips including the Supreme Novices Hurdle, the very first race at 1.30pm.

On the first day of the 2020 Cheltenham Festival, Epatante will attempt to justify her position as ante-post favourite for the Champion Hurdle, but there will be opposition to the mare. That event is the highlight of a competitive opening seven races at the festival with several contenders emerging in most contests.

Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle (Cheltenham 1.30pm) Tip

Ante-post favourite Shishkin has won his last two starts over hurdles by more than ten lengths, but both victories were earned on flat tracks. He will face a challenge from Asterion Forlonge who won impressively at Leopardstown in a Grade 1 event while fellow Irish raider Abacadabras has been beaten only by the useful Envoi Allen in four races over hurdles.

The Colin Tizzard trained Fiddlerontheroof could be another challenger as he has easily won his latest two starts and coped with the Sandown finishing hill on both occasions.

Tip: Asterion Forlonge to Win (3/1)

Racing Post Arkle Trophy (Cheltenham 2.10pm) Tip

Notebook from the Henry de Bromhead stable is expected to start as favourite for this 2m event after winning all races over fences. Yet he has not won by more than five lengths in any of those contests. Fellow Irish horse Fakir d’Oudairies was recently beaten by Notebook but his rider lost an iron at a crucial moment. The Joseph O’Brien trained horse has won his two other chases.

As for the English challengers, Rouge Vif was an impressive winner last time at Warwick just a few weeks previously while Esprit Du Large won the Henry VIII Novices’ Chase on his previous outing after taking a major step upwards in class.

Tip: Fakir d’Oudairies to Win (9/2)

Ultima Handicap Chase (Cheltenham 2.50pm) Tip

After performing with credit at both Cheltenham and Aintree last season, Mister Malarky failed to trouble the judges in two of his starts this term while finishing sixth in Newbury’s Ladbrokes Trophy. A much-improved effort when winning at Kempton last month suggests a horse returning to form. Top-weight Vinndication will be formidable opponent after finishing fifth in the JLT Novices’ Chase last year and then winning at Ascot in decent ground on his only appearance this season back in November.

There have also been positive vibes regarding The Conditional who was second in the Ladbrokes Trophy but who had won at Cheltenham over a similar three miles distance back in October. Another horse to note is Cogry who is a multiple winner at Cheltenham and has been placed or better in all three races this season.

Tip: Mister Malarky to Win (12/1)

Each-way Tip: Cogry (25/1)

Unibet Champion Hurdle (Cheltenham 3.30pm) Tip

With previous winner Buveur D’air injured and the ill-fated Espoir d’Allen unable to defend his crown, Epatante will aim to justify the confidence of trainer Nick Henderson. Although she has won both races this term, those victories have been earned on flat tracks and her well-being has been the subject of discussion in the past week.

Among the opposition is the Willie Mullins trained Cilaos Emery who has been supplemented and who had been campaigned over fences until winning the Red Mills hurdle last time. Last season’s JCB Triumph hurdle winner Pentland Hills will also be a competitor and there were signs of a return to form when he narrowly finished second at Haydock last time. He may improve for that outing while stable companion Fusil Raffles could be a real danger if his previous poor effort is ignored.

Tip: Pentland Hills to Win (5/1)

Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle (Cheltenham 4.10pm) Tip

A final hurdle fall prevented 2018 winner Benie Des Dieux from retaining her mares’ crown last season, but she will be back this season after winning her three subsequent starts following that mishap. The Willie Mullins trained mare will be opposed by Honeysuckle who is a Grade 1 winner and has yet to be beaten over hurdles.

The Irish mare is probably favoured by this 2m4f distance but won over two miles at the Dublin Festival. Another horse to consider is last season’s winner Roksana who benefited from the fall of the favourite, and she was an encouraging second place in her previous contest after failing to score since her Festival triumph. The consistent Stormy Ireland could emerge as decent each-way value.

Tip: Honeysuckle to Win (5/2)

Northern Trust Company Novices’ Handicap Chase (Cheltenham 4.50pm) Tip

This 2m4f contest over fences is normally a very open contest and Irish raider Galvin will feature after finishing second behind Salsaretta in a novices’ chase at Punchestown. Imperial Aura should not be dismissed after finishing second in his last two races at Cheltenham and he will not lack stamina at the finish. There could also be decent each-way value from Champagne Mystery who won his opening chase at this distance and then was placed in two subsequent novices’ races as he earned an entry for this handicap.

Tip: Galvin to Win (6/1)

Each-way: Champagne Mystery (33/1)

National Hunt Chase (Cheltenham 5.30pm) Tip

At four miles in distance, this can be a gruelling contest but Willie Mullins has earmarked this race for Carefully Selected who is unbeaten in all three races over fences. A reliable jumper and steady galloper, he gave the impression of needing further when winning over three miles at Naas last time.

There will be opposition from Lord Du Mesnil who has been placed in all six chases this season while winning three including a marathon 3m4f trip around Haydock. He later finished second in the Grand National trial over the same course and distance. Meanwhile, Springfield Fox was a very easy winner of her latest start over three miles in heavy going at Exeter, whereas Lamanver Pippin needs drier ground but won more easily that the five lengths suggests when scoring at Chepstow back in November. He has not raced since that victory.

Tip: Carefully Selected to Win (7/4)

Each-way: Lamanver Pippin (16/1)
