The first race of the meeting at Doncaster is the British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes over 1m and the field includes four runners bred from the legend Frankel. This is a wide open race with mostly well-bred newcomer. I am going for LATEST GENERATION to build on his debut run at Sandown when he was an impressive 3rd of 16 over 7f.
He is a Frankel colt and can improve again and should be suited to the further trip for trainers Simon & Ed Crisford. He can use his experience from his previous run to get the better of the other runners in this contest.
Side Shot is the only other runner in the race to have a previous run when he was 5th of 8 in a minor event at Yarmouth over 7f 15 days ago. He can progress again and with Frankie Dettori booked on board he is one to watch.
Mohaafeth comes from Frankel and the William Haggas trained 2-year-old will be one to watch in the betting market. Royal Champion for Roger Varian comes here with a good pedigree from Sharmardal from the USA and is one to note. This is an interesting race on paper but I feel LATEST GENERATION will be the one to beat for me.
Next up we have a 9 runner race at Doncaster in the bet365 Nursery and I like the look of MAYAAS to break his maiden here. The Dark Angel colt has progressed in each of his starts to date. He only found fellow runner in this contest Ataser too good in a York nursery over 7f last month. I feel he can improve again and there is no reason why he can get the win here. He is equipped with cheekpieces for the first time.
As mentioned above, Ataster is a promising sort who found more in the locker when winning a nursery at York last month, he is yet to run a bad race and jockey Ray Dawson claims 5lb. Gumdrop won on his nursery debut at Chester over 6f finishing well on top. He is up 9lb as a result of that but I don’t think his progression will stop after 3 races.
A Boy Named Ivy left his debut well behind when he landed an 8 runner race at Ayr in July and was a good 2nd of 9 from a unpromising position at Haydock in a nursery 29 days ago. This will be harder but is still one of interest for trainer Alistair Whillans and jockey Kevin Stott.
Twilight Song won last time out at Sailsbury over 6f, following up from his impressive debut at Winsdor over the same distance. He is expected to stay 7f and there is more to come. Concessions is now handicapping and Sean Levey takes over the mount from Ryan Moore. Al Watan has been a beaten favourite in both of his first two starts and is making his handicap debut and connections will be hoping for improvement.
In the listed bet365 Scarbrough Stakes over 5f 3y, MOSS GILL has showed he is a sprinter when landing a listed race at York in July and was an impressive 3rd to Battaash in the Nunthorpe 19 days ago. He progressed a lot last season and is continuing that this season. Daniel Tudhope is booked again on board for the James Bethell trained 4-year-old.
Another horse who is form is Dakota Gold, who ran on Sunday when 2nd to Starman at York. If he is turned around quickly he can be leading player here. Urban Beat, for trainer Jonny Murtagh, comes over from Ireland and can be a danger with Frankie Dettori booked on board. He has gone close in two listed races this summer.
Acklam Express has been in red hot form this season and completed a hat trick last time at York 3 weeks ago. He has been given plenty weight allowance as a 2-year-old but this is tougher against senior runners. Tarboosh has E/W claims and he is a smart Sprinter on his day but he has been hot and cold this season. Makanah is a likeable sprinter who will be looking to run a big race and has place claims.
The Mondialiste Leger Legends Classified Stakes over 1m is packed with 22 runners. I am going for an each-way tip here and my selection is ROCA MAGICA for trainer Ed Dunlop and Frankie Dettori. She is a multiple AW winner this season and last won back in July at Yarmouth over 1m. She was 4th last time out over 7f 15 days ago at Yarmouth. The step back up to 1m is a help for her and with stall 1, I feel she can be a contender and be involved in the run in.
Late Arrival is looking to break the maiden for trainer Simon and Ed Crisford after 3 solid efforts recently in handicaps. William Buick takes over the mount from Hollie Doyle. Flying Dragon has just 1 win from 22 runs but did run well when 2nd of 9 at Sailsbury last week. Connections will be hoping for much the same here. Hood is refitted again.
Lexington Warfare is in great form recently but has a difficult stall to navigate from. The same goes for Catch My Breath who won’t mind the ground and will like the race to be run quickly and should stay the distance. One Step Beyond is another to watch in the market for trainer Richard Spencer and jockey Tom Marquand. Mykonos St John has a tough draw (21) but he is unexposed and is one of the more interesting runners.
The Group 3 bet365 Sceptre Fillies’ Stakes over 7f 6y has a field of 15 runners and I am going for an each-way selection again with a larger field. I like the look of the BOUNCE THE BLUES who is making her debut for trainer Andrew Balding who was vastly progressive for John Feane in Ireland. She is looking to complete a hat trick and there is more to come from.
Another horse who is one to consider is Cloak Of Spirits for trainer Richard Hannon and jockey Andrea Atzeni. Jubiloso placed on her third start in the Coronation Stakes. She hasn’t been near that form since but has strong claims if she finds that form here. Mubtasimah will be looking to get back on track after a break for William Haggas and jockey Tom Marquand. Althiqa is a useful filly who last won at Deauville over 7f in a listed event in July. She has been placed in better company since then and can be involved. Gypsy Whisper is looking to complete a hat trick here after completing a double at Sandown recently, but this is a bigger step up in class.
In the second last race of the day at Doncaster, the Each Way Extra At bet365 Handicap over 1m 2f 43y and I like the chances of CARADOC for Ed Walker and Tom Marquand, who was a multiple winner last season. His form doesn’t read great so far this season but his performances looked better than the final result and with the step down in trip, I feel he can make his presence known here and be a big player.
Derevo was a dual handicap last summer and has shaped well recently this term. His run suggested better than the end result at York last time out. He should have more in his locker and can be a leading contender from 1lb lower. Sky Defender likes these types of fields and was last successful back in July at Epsom. He has been good in 4 of his last 5 starts, jockey Oliver Stammers claims 7lb.
Hypothetical will be looking to put a bad run behind them after finishing 12th of 14 at Ascot back in June and remains with Potential for trainer John Gosden and Frankie Dettori.
Mayfair Spirit has a good strike rate in handicaps but this will be tougher. Pivoine won the John Smith Cup from 4lb higher last season but has been off form this season and trainer Andrew Balding will be hoping for more of last seasons form. Starcat, a AW winner on debut went backwards after that but was 5th of 12 in a Goodwood Handicap last time. Tongue tie on and merits respect for me.
Our final selection of the day in the Parkes Bros Roofing Contractors Handicap over 5f 3y and I like LINE OF REASON for trainer Paul Midgley and Paul Hanagan. He broke his losing streak at Newmarket over 5f in June and was close to winning over C&D 25 days ago. He is the veteran in the race and could take plenty of the beating here.
Eeh Bah Gum can be a contender if turned out quickly after appearing at Thirsk on Sunday. He has dropped down the weights since being prolific in 2018. Glory Fighter missed out on a hat trick a fortnight ago at Musselburgh when 9th of 10. He was slowly away and could bounce back here. Shoot To Kill merits consideration with William Buick booked on board.
