Ladbrokes Prestige Stakes – 1.50 Goodwood
This 7f Group 3 race for 2-year-olds could be an opportunity for
Isabella Giles to return to winning ways after claiming victory her first two races. She then finished a close fourth in a Group 3 contest at Ascot last time but finished well after being outpaced and could be a better filly over this slightly longer distance.
Opposition will be provided by Prado who won her only start when comfortably winning at Salisbury over this distance last month despite a slow start. Pomelo is also unbeaten after winning her only contest over 7f by five lengths at Newbury and raced keenly early in the contest.
Unlike Prado and Pomelo who are competing for just the second time, Happy Romance will start her sixth race having won on three previous occasions. Having won the York Yearling race last time when stepping up to six furlongs, her stamina for this longer trip must be taken on trust.
Close Brothers Hopeful Stakes – 2.05 Newmarket
After winning the Stewards Cup at Goodwood last time, Summerghand now attempts to claim this 6f Listed event. He failed when finishing sixth in a Group 3 race last month but expect him to finish with a late flourish if he is competitive in this affair.
Opponents will include Jash who has raced just once this season when finishing fourth at Newcastle. He will be better for that outing after racing keenly, and he was a Listed winner over seven furlongs on this course last term besides competing in the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup.
It is also worth watching Sunday Star who finished well when finished a close third at York last month in a Group 3 contest although she may just prefer a longer trip, while Raucous was very busy last year and won two decent races but fitness may be a problem on his seasonal reappearance.
Another danger may be Ventura Rebel who finished third in the Commonwealth Cup and who never fully recovered from a slow start at York last time.
Ladbrokes March Stakes – 3.00 Goodwood
This 1m6f Group 3 contest has been won by some useful horses in previous years and four horses will participate in a competitive 2020 renewal. Cabaletta will be a leading player after following home Enbihaar in a three-runner field contesting the Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes over course and distance earlier this month. She had previously won a Listed event at Newbury.
Subjectivist will be another contender despite a tame effort in the Great Voltigeur last week. His performance in the Gordon Stakes was much more promising yet he may be suspect at this distance whereas Celtic Art is another unknown quantity at further than ten furlongs.
That is not the case with Table Mountain who easily won a two miles handicap at Ascot last time off a particularly low weight, but this race will be much tougher.
Ladbrokes Celebration Mile – 3.35 Goodwood
After racing with much credit over ten furlongs for much of the early season, Regal Reality contested a Group 3 event at Salisbury last time and comfortably won that one-mile affair. The 5-year-old gelding now tackles Group 2 company over the same distance and is a previous course and distance winner but may not wish too much rain.
However, overcoming Benbatl will be no easy task with the Godolphin horse returning to action after competing in the Middle East over the Winter. He was a dual Group 2 winner over 9f at Meydan and was successful at this level over this distance at Newmarket last September following a lengthy absence.
Another entry will be Duke Of Hazzard who was well-beaten by Regal Reality last time but raced too keenly in that race. A decent second-placed effort in Goodwood’s Group 2 Lennox Stakes is more typical of his overall form and he did win this race last season.
Take note also of Century Dream who won a Group 3 race on his seasonal debut before finishing a fairly close fifth behind the useful Persian King at Chantilly in a Group 1 affair, while Sir Busker and Urban Icon both try to win their first ever race at Group level.
