OntheNod Podcast Special – Alice Plunkett Joins us to talk Cue Card, Frodon, the Charlie Hall & Cheltenham Festival

Alice Plunkett podcast special

On a very special episode of the OntheNod Podcast this week, we were joined by ITV Racing‘s Alice Plunkett and as well as previewing the Charlie Hall Chase this weekend, she also spoke about some of her favourite horses and gave us some early clues ahead of the 2021 Cheltenham Festival.

Frodon’s win last weekend was another hot topic of conversation for Alice, who joined our host Will and tipsters Ant and Henry.

She spoke very fondly of her time on Channel 4 Racing and about the fantastic work ITV Racing are now doing to get the younger generation involved in the sport.

Alice Plunkett on Frodon’s win

One of the highlights of last weekend’s racing was the win of Frodon at Cheltenham. Giving all of his rivals weight and 17lb to the second horse, the Paul Nicholls inmate put up a perfect round of jumping to beat Western Approach up the Cheltenham hill. It was a performance that put him into the Gold Cup reckoning and speaking to the guys on the OnetheNod Podcast, Plunkett explained the job when Frodon and Bryony Frost came back into an unusually quiet winnings enclosure at Cheltenham:

“He was giving 2 stone to everybody else, what was exciting was he just stayed. He really stayed. When he started to put the screw on everything else it was his jumping that just kept on coming. The way he jumped the last he had more in the tank.

“There is no doubt that the more he has aged, despite being only 7, that was his sixth win at Cheltenham and I always think form around that track is so important.

“I think at this early stage, if he stays sound…that puts him right in the mix for the Gold Cup”

Alice then goes on to tell the lads exactly what Paul Nicholls said to jockey Bryony Frost when she jumped off the winner:

“Literally, as Bryony got off him, Paul said her ‘you’ve just given your chance a spin in the Gold Cup

Charlie Hall Preview

Cyrname is the current favourite for the race at Asot but Alice Plunkett says she “cannot understand why Definitely Red is such a big price”. He’s a former winner and Brian Ellison’s horses are in good form.

At the time of recording the Podcast, Definitely Red was a 6/1 shot but he’s now as big as 10/1.

bet365 Hurdle

The staying division looks wide open again this season and the lads on the Podcast are not expecting Lisnagar Oscar to reproduce his performance from the Cheltenham Festival last season when he won the Stayer’s Hurdle at 50/1.

Alice Plunkett questions why Copperhead is entered and set to run in this race as he is one of her Novice Chasers to follow this season. It may be that the horse lost confidence after his fall last time out.

The Staying Hurdle division is wide open this season and Ant thinks the win last season was a bit of a fluke in the Stayer’s Hurdle. Paisley Park put up a poor performance but he could bounce back to his best ahead of the division this season.
