Saturday’s ITV Racing Tips – Race by Race Betting Tips for 18th July
What a Saturday ITV have got planned for us. They are showing coverage of 8 live races from York & Newbury including the John Smith’s City Walls Stakes at York and the bet365 Rose Bowl Stakes at Newbury. I will give my tips and preview for the 8 races below.
SEVEN FREE £5 BETS

First up we have the John Smith’s Silver Cup Stakes (Group 3) running over 1m 5f 188y.
In a small field of 5 runners where anyone could stake a claim here. I am going for COMMUNIQUE to edge his rivals. He was a dual Group 2 winner last year at Newmarket. He showed what he can be capable of when second in a Group 2 there last week and if he turns up here in the same mood, I feel with this being a drop-in class and an easier race compared to last weeks he can really be a threat. He hasn’t raced at 1m 5f so there is a concern for stamina but I feel he will be suited to the step-up in trip and will look to be one of the leading contenders. Current market favourite Moonlight Spirit is taking a massive drop in trip after finishing last to Stradivarius in the Group 1 over 2m 4 last month at Ascot but he definitely remains a horse with potential and is one to watch out for. The same goes for Universal Order with the returning Jamie Spencer on board who is 5 wins from 8 runs and has placed in all but 1 race. He will leave it late to attack whereas COMMUNIQUE will like to lead from the front.
Next up we have The Rose Bowl Stakes (Class 1) (Listed Race) over 6f and I am going for the impressive METHOD. The Mehmas colt romped to victory on his debut at Doncaster 22 days ago beating Fev Rover by 4 and a half lengths. So its no surprise to see him stepping up in class so quickly. I feel with the booking off Oisin Murphy it gives an indication of what level they expect this colt to be at. I expect him to improve again can complete a double. Mighty Gurkha for Archie Watson and Hollie Doyle can improve again after a good 5th to Tactical last mouth at Ascot. Imperial Yellow can go well again for Roger Varian and Bowman at 12/1 currently holds good value for a place.
Here we have the John Smith’s Cup Handicap (Heritage) over 1m 2f 56y with a field of 2 runners and I am going for value here with some bookies paying 6 places for this race. My tip here is GREAT EXAMPLE as an each-way selection. The 4-year-old has had some time of the track, 301 days to be exact, but was only beaten by Caradoc when second of 13 at Newbury last September. Caradoc is currently the market favourite at 11/2 so it gives good reading so far. With Cieren Fallon on board the 9/1 shot, he has claimed 3lbs what can help him here. With a good draw (6) I feel he can offer more as a 4-year old and will be one to watch. Fifth Position for Roger Varian and Jack Mitchell can improve after scoring over this distance at Doncaster last month but draw 17 will be hard to navigate. Sky Defender has had a brilliant year so far improving again to win on Derby day at Epsom but with stall 23 he will have a hard task. Harrovian is one to watch out for in the betting for John Gosden and Frankie Dettori. Afaak at 20/1 has good value.
In the British EBF/ bet365 Premier Fillies’ Handicap (Str) over 1m, I am tipping TOMORROWS DREAM for William Haggas and Hollie Doyle. She is a progressive type who has won over 6f and 7f. She was a winner last time out at Chepstow when last seen 18 days ago. She is up 8lbs pounds but is still on a good mark of 8st 4lb and I feel she will relish the step up in trip and can progress again. Hubbor is a dual winner as a 2-year-old who was 6th at Royal Ascot over 1m, he has dropped 1lb from that race and will be a contender here. Tonyx is looking to complete a hat-trick so won’t be discounted.
Next up we have the John Smith’s City Walls Stakes (Listed) (Class 1) (3Yo Plus) over 5f.
I like the look of El ASTRONAUTE for Jason Hart and trainer J J Quinn who was a brilliant 3rd in the Abbaye at Longchamp. He was last seen when winning at Doncaster over 5f 34 days ago. He may have a 3lb penalty but I feel he can overcome that penalty and win live on ITV Racing once again. Equilateral for Charlie Hills and James Doyle can challenge after chasing home Battaash in the Kings Stand at Ascot. He is dropping down in trip and has a penalty to navigate as well. Que Amoro is a C&D winner here and will look to improve again for Connections. One to check in the market for an each-way bet is Alpha Delphini who won a C&D here in 2018 and a good second to speedster Battaash last season, if he turns up in that form he will be one to watch.
In the bet365 Aphrodite Fillies’ Stakes (Listed) (Class 1) (3Yo Plus) over 1m 4f and I feel VIRGIN SNOW, who is out of Snow Fairy, who is a multiple Group 1 winner, is a good selection. She is heading in the right direction for E Dunlop after winning a handicap at Haydock and was second when last seen at Newcastle. She will progress here and I feel she can be a leading contender. La Lune is open to progress for H Candy and can be a danger for VIRGIN SNOW. One to watch in the market betting is Shailene with Ryan Moore on board.
In the last race on ITV at York it is the William Hill Extra Places Every Day Handicap over 1m 3f 188y and I am tipping ARCTIC FOX. She was successful in the Queen Mother’s Cup over C&D off a similar mark last year and she ran a big well at Ripon last week. She is returning to this trip and can go well here I think. Make My Day returns to the track after gelding and could still have more to offer for new connections Ralph Beckett. Elector off a bigger mark of 10st can show his potential stepping back up in trip for David O’ Meara and Danny Tudhope.
In the Last live race of the day for ITV at Newbury, my selection in the bet365 Hackwood Stakes (Group 3) over 6f is TINTO E/W for Mrs A J Perrett and Jason Watson. He is a three-time winner this year and has won 6 races over 5f and 6f. He has had some good showing this season and is respected here. Summerghand, who arrives in cracking form as well is worth trying his luck at this level. I feel The Tin Man can win this with dropping down in class and having Oisin Murphy booked on board as he is 3 times Group 3 winner and won this in 2016. Shine So Bright has another crack at this trip and merits respect.
