Wednesday’s ITV Racing Tips: Newmarket and Cheltenham Feature for 6 Live Races

On Wednesday, ITV Racing cameras are at Newmarket, for the Craven Meeting, and at Cheltenham. We aim to make the most of this rare midweek treat for armchair punters with a selection in each of the six televised races.

The action gets underway at 1.50pm with a Class 2 Handicap at Newmarket and there are three other races from HQ, including the Group 3 Earl of Sefton Stakes ay 3pm.

From Cheltenham, there are two live races, at 2.05pm and 2.40pm and we’ve also previewed both of them below.

1:50 Weatherbys Handicap

A typically tricky early-season sprint handicap with all sorts of ifs, buts and maybes. However, while Stony Of Destiny has a 207-day absence to overcome and is arguably better over 5 furlongs, in  any case, he has fewer questions to answer than most. Andrew Balding’s 6-year-old has gone well fresh, more than once, in the past and, although 6lb higher in the weights than when winning the valuable Portland Handicap at Doncaster last September, is only 2lb higher than when winning the Shergar Cup Dash at Ascot in 2019.

Selection: Stone Of Destiny (9/1 with William Hill)

2:25 bet365 European Free Handicap

Naval Crown took the notable scalp of stable companion Master Of The Seas over a mile at Meydan in February and, if that form is reliable, must take a world of beating here. His juvenile form was respectable, if unspectacular, but he is 2-2 on the prevailing good going, one of the two distance winners in the field and has little or nothing to find on official ratings, so he looks worth sticking with on this occasion.

Selection: Naval Crown (7/4 with Bet365)

3:00 bet365 Earl Of Sefton Stakes

After contesting the Bahrain International Trophy and the Saudi Cup, on dirt, on his two previous starts, Global Giant appreciated the easier assignment when readily winning the Ladbrokes Magnolia Stakes at Kempton last time. However, he may not be one to go overboard about and preference of this occasion is for San Donato. Although winless last season, the son of Lope De Vega ran his best race on his reappearance, over a mile on good ground, at  Ascot in July. He could go well at rewarding odds.

Selection: San Donato (13/2 with William Hill)

3:35 Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes

The New Bay filly Saffron Beach has done everything asked of her so far and, provided she’s fit and ready to do herself justice on her first run for over six months, can maintain her 100% record. She holds Mamba Wamba on their running in the Group Three Oh So Sharp Stakes, over course and distance last October and clocked a faster time than Divine Light, who won the 7-furlong maiden on the same card. She also won her maiden – a race that’s thrown up plenty of winners – over course and distance, on good going, last September, so she is hard to fault.

Selection: Saffron Beach (11/4 with Bet365)

Cheltenham

  • 2:05 Ballymore Silver Trophy Handicap Chase
  • 2:40 Kingston Stud Handicap Hurdle

2:05 Ballymore Silver Trophy Handicap Chase

Coole Cody won the Paddy Power Gold Cup on the Old Course here in November off a handicap mark of 137 and ran well off his revised mark, over course and distance, when fourth, beaten 6½ lengths, behind The Shunter in the Paddy Power Plate at the Cheltenham Festival. The winner did that form no harm when a highly creditable second in the Manifesto Novices’ Chase at Aintree last week so, off an unchanged mark, Evan Williams’ 10-year-old may be able to pick up the winning thread.

Selection: Coole Cody (5/1 with Bet365)

2:40 Kingston Stud Handicap Hurdle

Java Point finally shed his maiden tag, at the eighth attempt, at Warwick a fortnight ago, but his earlier handicap form suggests that he could well be able enough to win at this level. His best form over hurdles has come on the prevailing good going and, with proven stamina, he should be well suited to the demands of the New Course.

Selection: Java Point (6/1 with Bet365)
