Newmarket racecourse

Brian Healy has picked out his Newmarket July meeting day 3 betting tips below, along with a preview of each of the seven races on Saturday.

We enter the third and final day of the July Meeting at Newmarket on Saturday and there is plenty of classy horse racing action to look forward to once more with the day’s seven-race card spearheaded by the latest renewal of the Group One July Cup.

Getting underway a little earlier than previous days with the first race scheduled for 1.40pm, the day’s seven-race card again features on Saturday’s ITV Racing coverage where Ed Chamberlain and the team will be on hand to cover six of the day’s races on a bumper 12-race programme which also features Ascot and York.

As with the previous two days’ racing at the Newmarket July Meeting, we’ve assessed all the day’s action and picked out our Newmarket Saturday tips for the final day of the midsummer highlight on the July Course.

1:40 Newmarket – Rossdales British EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (GBB Race) (IRE Incentive Race) Cl3 (2yo) 7f

A trappy opener to day three of the July Meeting, where just three of the ten runners scheduled to go to post have had a prior run. It might pay then to side with the experience of ORIONS BELT (13/2), who shaped quite well despite obvious greenness on debut at Salisbury last month.

Richard Hannon’s charge was shades of odds-on there, but the Starman filly could only finish fourth, although she wasn’t beaten far with just one length covering the first four home. That initial experience certainly won’t have been lost on her and she’s sure to improve on the back of that run.

This extra furlong could also bring about further progress, and while she takes on some nicely-bred newcomers her,e she may well be capable of making her experience tell and come out on top.

2:12 Newmarket – Trustatrader 20th Anniversary Fillies’ Handicap Cl2 (3yo+ 0-100) 7f

MISS NIGHTFALL (9/4) was arguably given too much to do in the Sandringham at Royal Ascot last month, but she caught the eye finishing well from off the pace, and it might be worth chancing James Fanshawe’s charge to get back on the scoresheet.

The Sands Of Mali filly was a winner last term at Windsor before making the frame in a pair of valuable conditions races at Doncaster and Goodwood towards the end of the campaign. The form of that Doncaster run is particularly strong, where she finished third and was beaten only a neck by subsequent dual-Group One winner Camille Pissarro.

She has raced twice this term, finishing runner-up at Goodwood in May prior to her Royal Ascot outing, where she was far from disgraced, and she can remain competitive from only 1lb higher in the weights. A drop back to seven furlongs also rates a positive, although the lack of any obvious pace in the race is a slight worry given she has seemed at her best coming off a strong pace.

However, she is open to further improvement on just her second handicap start, and she can make her presence felt once more under  Saffie Osborne.

2:50 Newmarket – bet365 Bunbury Cup (Heritage Handicap) Cl2 (3yo+) 7f

RUN BOY RUN (11/1) is still chasing a first win of the campaign, but it may pay to side with Richard Spencer’s charge to break its seasonal duck in this valuable and competitive handicap. A four-time winner last term, both on turf and the all-weather he had made the frame in a trio of strong handicaps earlier in the season prior to his latest outing in the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.

There, the Rajasinghe gelding could only finish ninth, beaten around seven lengths, although he did best of the low-drawn horses who dominated that contest.

As a consequence ,he can be forgiven that run and he boasts a good record at this venue with two wins and two places from four visits to Flat HQ. He wasn’t far behind reopposing More Thunder when the two met earlier in the season, but enjoys a slight pull at the weights with that rival so there ought not to be too much between them if both run up to their best, although the selection is narrowly preferred.

A couple of these rivals do like to go forward as does the selection so he may get some competition for the lead; however, he’s one to remain positive about given his generally consistent profile and course record so a big run wouldn’t come as a shock in this competitive contest.

3:25 Newmarket – bet365 Mile Handicap Cl2 (3yo 0-100) 1m

SECRET THEORY (8/1) lost all chance at the start when last seen out at Goodwood, and Charlie Appleby’s charge is given another chance.

The Dubawi gelding had won his first two career starts either side of an absence, scoring on debut here back in October and doubling up at Nottingham in April on his return. The runner-up and third in that race have both won since, and he is forgiven his latest run where he blew the start and never got involved.

That race is working out very well, the winner having won twice since including the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot ; while the third won the Jersey Stakes and there’s reason to think there’s more in the locker of the Godolphin runner who is one of three in the race sporting the famous blue silks.

He’ll get a good pace to aim at here, and assuming he can get away from the stalls on term,s he can get involved so it wouldn’t come as a shock were he to put his Goodwood run behind him with an improved show.

4:00 Newmarket – bet365 Superlative Stakes (Group 2) Cl1 (2yo) 7f

ITALY (4/7) overcame a slow start and inexperience to score a shade readily on his debut at Leopardstown in May, and with that run under his belt, Aidan O’Brien’s charge is taken to step forward significantly on the back of that performance.

The Wootton Bassett colt was slow away from the stalls and briefly looked in trouble mid-race. However, he knuckled down well and stayed on strongly to the winning line to post a going-away victory over Thesecretadversary.

The front pair pulled clear of the remainder, and the runner-up did little harm to the form when going close in the Chesham at Royal Ascot. The form of that race gives Aidan O’Brien’s charge a slight edge on fellow unbeaten rival Saba Desert, who beat the Chesham seventh-placed horse on debut and the pair look closely matched using that Royal Ascot contest as a yardstick.

The Godolphin runner Saba Desert is feared, but there is surely more to come from the Ballydoyle runner who ought to build on that initial experience and he could prove a tough nut to crack here with a likely strong pace sure to suit..

4:35 Newmarket – Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai July Cup Stakes (Group 1) Cl1 (3yo+) 6f

FLORA OF BERMUDA (5/1) was a shade unlucky in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot last month and it might be worth chancing Andrew Balding’s charge to get back on the scoresheet here.

The Dark Angel filly was a Group Three winner at York last term before running with credit without adding to her tally in a trio of Group One races including going close when finishing third in the Champion Sprint at Ascot in October.

Denied a clear run at a crucial stage when beaten a neck by reopposing Inisherin at York on her reappearance, she again met with some trouble in running at Ascot and suffered a bump that halted her momentum. Still, she rallied well and while no match for the front two she got up for third and with a little more luck in running, she could better that result.

Although both her career wins have come on soft ground, she has shown that quicker conditions hold no fears and she can make her presence felt again here.

5:10 Newmarket – Trustatrader Handicap (GBBPlus Race) Cl3 (3yo+ 0-90) 1m4f

ATLANTIC SUNSET (SP) responded well to the change of headgear when getting off the mark on the Rowley Mile when last seen out last month, and Charlie Johnston’s charge is taken to follow up.

The Waldgeist colt finished runner-up twice earlier in the year on the all-weather, and he almost registered his first win on his first run on turf following a couple of months off, beaten less than one length by Hallelujah U at Thirsk in May.

That winner has since acquitted himself in graded company, and the Johnston runner also had a subsequent winner in arrears. The race possibly came too soon next time at Haydock when disappointing behind Kurakka; but he bounced back equipped with a visor rather than blinkers to run out a ready winner over Patrol on his latest outing.

That form has taken a couple of knocks, and he’ll need to pull out more from this higher mark in a stronger race than he’s contested thus far. Most of his rivals however, have a question to answer after lesser runs themselves last time, so it might pay to stick with the Johnston runner remaining in similar form to last time, especially if the headgear switch continues to have a positive effect.
