Horse Racing Tips for York, Ascot and Newmarket on Saturday 12th July

2:00 York
The first race from York on ITV is a trappy handicap over a mile.
I’d be happy to chance BLUE FOR YOU (9/2) NB here who, if anyone near his better form, he’d be sure to very close in this. The winner of this race in both 2023 and 2024, we know the track and trip obviously suit him strongly. He’s a 1lb lower than this time last year, and there was enough promise last time out for me to think he can go close to landing the hat-trick.
2:22 Ascot
The 2:22 from Ascot is up next. It is the Group 2 Summer Mile Stakes.
I like PRAGUE (8/1) for the Dylan Cunha yard. A progressive sort last season, which included a Group 2 victory in the Joel Stake,s where he duly bolted up. He’d have come on a bundle for his seasonal return, and he now returns to his ideal trip. At the prices, he’s the one I’d like to be with.
2:35 York
The 2:35 from York is the City Wall Stakes, a listed contest over 5f.
I think WASHINGTON HEIGHTS (2/1) is the one to beat here. A Group 3 winner last season, he’s more than capable at this level. He’s shown strong form in his last two outings too. Firstly, he was a fine third in a decent renewal of the Group 3 Temple Stakes at Haydock. He then backed that up running a cracker at Group 1 level at Royal Ascot, where he was only 2 lengths behind the winner American Affair. If he runs to that level, he should be winning this race.
3:10 York
Next up is the competitive John Smith’s Cup Handicap over the extended 1m2f trip.
I like the progressive SEE THE STORM (6/1) here. A mark of 95 looks well within his reach and he brings a strong level of form to the table for this. A winner on seasonal reappearance at Redcar, he’s followed that up with two cracking runner-up efforts. The first of those was where he was narrowly touched off in the competitive Zetland Gold Cup again at Redcar. He then filled the same spot here at York last time out behind the improving Burrito. That’s a decent level of form and I don’t think there’s anything in this field that has the potential of Burrito.
3:45 York
The 3:45 from York is the Silver Cup Stakes, a Group 3 over 1m6f.
It’s TABLETALK (9/4) for me who deserves to win at Group level. The winner of the always competitive Melrose Handicap here at York last season. I think he’ll relish this trip, having run respectable after slightly shorter in all three runs this season. He’ll likely sit just off the favourite Al Qareem and hopefully he can pick him off late on.
4:35 Newmarket
The feature today is the Group 1 July Cup Stakes over the 6f trip.
I’d chance BIG MOJO (16/1) EW who looks overpriced in this. A star 2 year-old, he returned to action as good as ever when winning the Commonwealth Cup trial at Ascot on Trials day. He just got going too late at Haydock next time out and he was very eye-catching last time out at Royal Ascot, staying on from a terrible early position to finish never nearer. This 6f trip on the July course could suit him well and he’s a lively one at a decent price.
4:50 Ascot
The final race is the 4:50 from Ascot, a wide-open handicap over 5f.
It’s hard to get away from HOLKHAM BAY (4/1) NAP in here. He’s a course and distance here winner at Ascot and he’s arguably coming into this race of a career best effort when finishing 4th at Royal Ascot in the competitive Wokingham Handicap. He won his side there so that effort can be marked up. He’s only up a 1lb and compensation awaits.
