ITV Racing Tips from Newmarket and York on Saturday 14th October

Newmarket racecourse

1:15 York

The first of ten live races is the 1:15 at York and it is the Rockingham Stakes, a listed contest for 2 year-olds over 6 furlongs.

I like PUROSANQUE (3/1) here from the Andrew Balding stable. He won on debut at Haydock before being pitched into Group 2 company. He ran respectful finishing mid-division given that was just his second start and he’s been really consistent and arguably unlucky on his next three starts. He’s finished runner-up on all three occasions but this race doesn’t look as deep on paper as any of them in my opinion. The way he stayed on over 5f last time out suggests this 6f trip is maybe what he wants now. He won’t mind what the ground does and I’m hoping he can put his experience to good use here and gain a much deserved listed level victory.

1:25 Newmarket

The first of five races from Newmarket is the Group 3 Autumn Stakes for the 2 year-olds over the mile.

I like ANCIENT WISDOM (7/4) in this. A good winner on his first two career starts at Haydock and Newmarket, he then went to Ascot and finished third still looking a little green. He wasn’t beaten far by Rosallion thrre who’s since won a Group 1 and with the Charlie Appleby yard’s 2 year-olds running a lot better recently including a good winner here yesterday, I think he’s bound to go close.

2:00 Newmarket

The 2:00 from Newmarket is the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes over 7f.

I’d be looking at INDIAN RUN (9/1) EW (Betting without fav) here. Trainer by Eve Johnson Houghton, she thinks a lot of him and it’s easy to why. His debut was a third placed effort at Newbury that was full of promise and he duly obliged at the second time of asking in a maiden at Ascot. He was then pitched into Acomb Stakes at York and despite racing wide throughout, he came with a winning run and won that in pretty decisive fashion. He has a long way to go to get near the favourite but he won’t fear any of the others. He’s on an upward curve and 7f looks ideal based on the Acomb victory.

2:25 York

The 2:25 from York is the Sprint Trophy Handicap and 22 runners are set to run in this 6f sprint.

It’s ALBASHEER (13/2) NAP for me here. A dead-heat victory in a similar competitive handicap when last seen here at York three starts back staying on powerfully in typical fashion from off the pace. He’s ran two similar races since, firstly at the Curragh before a fast-finishing fourth last time out in the Ayr Gold Cup off the same mark he’ll run off today. I think he’s got another handicap on him off this mark and returning to York is a positive. Given he can get far behind in his races, the soft ground will definitely suit and he’ll be flying home again when the front-runners are running on empty.

2:40 Newmarket

The 2:40 is the unique Cesarewitch Handicap with 34 runners spread out over the 2m2f track.

The one for me is VINO VICTRIX (12/1) EW. This will have been his primary target this season and he appears to be coming to the boil at the right time. He ran at Goodwood last time out over 2 miles and despite looking to be struggling halfway through, he found plenty for pressure to be only beaten 2 lengths by a solid yardstick in Novel Legend. He comes here off the same mark as 90. However, the most interesting piece of information has to be his second-placed finish in this race last year off a mark of 92. He only found Run For Oscar too good that day and there may not be a Run For Oscar in this year’s renewal. He is obviously therefore proven over track and trip and stall 12 is a decent draw for this race.

3:05 York

The 3:05 from York is a Maiden Stakes race with plenty of interesting newcomers set to make their debut.

I’d chance ASSAILANT (7/2) as he is possibly the most interesting newcomer in the line-up. Coming from the powerful John and Thady Gosden yard, he’s bred to be very good being a son of Dubawi and related to several winners. The ones with experience don’t set a very high standard and I’m hopeful he’ll be bang there on his racecourse debut.

3:15 Newmarket

Back to Newmarket for the 3:15 and it is the Zetland Stakes, a Group 3 over 1m2f.

I think ARABIAN CROWN (Evs) NB will take a fair bit of beating in this. Third on his debut at Sandown over 7f, he done well to win over that same trip back there on his second career start. He enjoyed the step up to a mile to win at Salisbury winning comfortably next time out and this step up to 1m2f looks likely to bring even further improvement out based on his breeding. He could be a serious horse in the middle distances classic next year in my opinion.

3:35 York

The final race from York comes up at 3:35 and it is a trappy handicap over the extended 1m2f trip.

I’ll give CERTAIN LAD (10/1) EW a shout here at the prices. He showed promise when second two starts back over at Sandown and despite finishing 5th last time out, he travelled really well into that race and was only beaten just over 2 lengths by the improving Balance Play. He handles cut in the ground and he looks a solid each-way selection in a competitive race off a 1lb lower than that fine run last time out.

3:50 Newmarket

The final race on ITV is the 3:50 and it is the Group 3 Darley Stakes over the 1m1f trip.

I think KNIGHT (3/1) deserves to get his head in front and today might be the day. He’s been really unlucky on his last two starts, beaten by short distances in both, firstly at Goodwood before a short head defeat behind Chindit at Sandown last time out. I think this extra furlong won’t hold any fears and he’ll enjoy the cut in the ground more than a lot of his rivals will. If James Doyle can get him settled early, I think he’ll take a lot of beating in this.
