York tips

The Dewhurst is the big race on Future Champions Day at Newmarket and there is always the big betting heat of the day, the Cesarewitch, is due off at 3.35pm where up to 33 runners will go to post.

Elsewhere, there are three live races from York and Henry has been through the seven ITV races and picked his best bet from each.

1:45 Newmarket

The Zetland Stakes is first up on ITV today. It is a Group 3 contest over 1m2f for 2-year olds.

My selection here is GOLDSPUR (7/2). The son of Dubawi was an ultra-impressive winner on debut at Sandown where he travelled strongly and picked up well to win by over 6l. He proved there he can handle a bit of cut in the ground and you’d expect him to improve for that racecourse experience. James Doyle keeps the ride.

2:02 York

The 2:02 from York is the Rockingham Stakes, a listed race over 6f again for 2 year-olds.

The one I like here is EVER GIVEN NAP (9/2). He is a solid contender here and I think we will see money for him before the off. He won a decent sales race here at York well two starts ago before being ran down last time out in a similar race at Doncaster when looking like the winner for the majority of the race. He can put his experience to good use in this big field and the strong pace will suit again. Won’t be far away.

2:20 Newmarket

The 2:20 race is the Autumn Stakes, another Group 3 for 2 year-olds but this time it is over the mile distance.

My selection in this is GREEN TEAM EW (40/1) at a huge price. He was 5th on debut at Haydock where he lacked experience and looked in need of the run. However, he seemed to have really improved when winning well at Ayr on his second and latest start where he travelled strongly throughout and found plenty for pressure to win comfortably. The son of Wootton Bassett can continue his steady improvement and hopefully hit the frame here.

2:37 York

The 2:37 race from York is next up and it is a tricky handicap for punters to get stuck into over 1m2f.

The one I’ve landed on here is BAY BRIDGE NB (5/2). A typical Sir Michael Stoute improver who looks a horse going places. He’s won his last two starts well including a 4l win last time out in the London Gold Cup. Up 4lb for that win back in May, he can complete the hat-trick.

2:55 Newmarket

The feature comes up at 2:55 and it is the Group 1 Darley Dewhurst Stakes, a Group 1 over 7f where often the winner goes antepost favourite for the 2000 Guineas.

Native Trial is short enough so I’m happy to chance STRAIGHT ANSWER (6/1) here. He’s been supplemented for the race by connections after winning both career starts in taken fashion. The son of Kodiac showed his versatility already when winning his debut on soft ground before winning a decent enough listed race on fast ground last time out at Fairyhouse. He really caught the eye that day and looked like a top 2 year-old. I think he’ll be the one to serve it up to the favourite and hopefully he can get the better of him to make it 3 from 3.

3:15 York

The 3:15 from York is the most wide open race of the day by far. A 6f handicap with Gulliver currently heading the market at the time of writing at 8/1. I’m sure there will be a gamble or two in this contest.

The one for me in this is BOARDMAN EW (22/1). He’s had an inconsistent season but when he’s on he has looked a  really good horse. He’s won here at York over 7f but I think the strong pace over 6f here on soft ground will see him staying on strongly and hopefully he can hit the frame at least.

3:35 Newmarket

The finale on Saturday’s ITV Coverage is the Cesarewitch Handicap, a unique 2m2f race where we quite often see the winner being trained by a jumps trainer.

I like BURNING VICTORY EW (10/1) here. A previous Triumph Hurdle winner at Cheltenham back in 2020 he was off the track for a while due to injury since and only returned to the track in May 2021. He needed his reappearance run before running respectively on his next hurdles start finishing 7th in the competitive Galway Hurdle. However, prior to that he won the flat and he’s since won on the flat again at the back end of August. He’s had a nice break since which suggests to me this has been the target. William Buick is a very encouraging jockey booking and he’s a good each way bet here is a wide open race.
