Premier League FPL Captain Analysis and Tips – Who should be Gameweek 23 Captain?

Fantasy Football tips

Who should be your Premier League FPL captain for GW22? We look at three options – Sergio Aguero vs Crystal Palace, Jamie Vardy vs Burnley and Trent Alexander-Arnold vs Manchester United.

Manchester City served up a timely reminder that their assets are not to be overlooked with a 6-1 mauling of Aston Villa. Aguero was the star of the show with a hat-trick whilst Mahrez, Jesus and De Bruyne all served up sizeable returns.

FPL Captain Analysis – Sergio Aguero (11.8m) vs Crystal Palace

Manchester derby odds

In light of Man City’s big win, Sergio Aguero makes his way into our shortlist for best FPL captain this week. The Argentine scored a hat-trick and added an assist on his way to a mega 20-point haul. In doing so, Aguero surpassed Alan Shearer’s Premier League hat-trick record.

Since his return from injury, Aguero has scored four goals and assisted once from two starts, taking his tally to 13 and four for the season. Considering he has started just 11 games, that is a very impressive return.

Crystal Palace haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last six and should present Aguero with chances.

FPL Captain Analysis – Jamie Vardy (9.6m) vs Burnley

Vardy didn’t manage a single shot against Southampton but came away with five points after his pinpoint cross found Dennis Praet. Having returned to action last time out, Vardy has now registered a goal or an assist in 12 of his last 14 games. During that period, only Liverpool were able to stop him.

Next up for the Premier League top goalscorer are a struggling Burnley side. The Clarets have taken a single point against top-half opposition this season and suffered a 2-1 loss to Leicester in Gameweek 9. Vardy returned eight points that day with a goal and two bonus points.

Only Kevin De Bruyne has directly contributed to more goals than Vardy’s 23 this season. The Belgian is also the only player to have scored more FPL points, one point ahead of Vardy.

FPL Captain Analysis – Trent Alexander-Arnold (7.5m) vs Manchester United

Liverpool to win the Premier League at the Etihad Stadium

Having kept six consecutive clean sheets, it is high time we considered a Liverpool defender for captaincy. The entire Liverpool defence equalled or outscored popular captain choices Mo Salah and Sadio Mané in their 1-0 win over Tottenham. Over the last four FPL gameweeks, Salah has accrued 22 points and Mané 28. The Liverpool defence meanwhile has recorded 25, 25, 33 and 44.

It’ll come as no surprise that those 44 points come courtesy of Alexander-Arnold. His mammoth Gameweek 19 haul illustrates how explosive the right-back can be as a captaincy option. TAA has two goals, ten assists and seven clean sheets for the season. Just three midfielders and four forwards have more FPL points so far so he has to go into our FPL captains picks.

Liverpool have scored just four goals in their last three games, limiting their midfielder’s appeal. Manchester United restricted The Reds to just one goal in their last meeting, a repeat could make TAA the better captaincy choice.

Best FPL Captain Choice for Gameweek 23

It’s a tough choice but we’re sticking by Jamie Vardy against a struggling Burnley for this week’s FPL captain. He is the fifth most transferred player into squads ahead of Gameweek 23 and just a point behind Kevin De Bruyne in the top FPL points scoring charts.
