World Cup 2020 Qualifying Tips: 4th & 5th September
Now that the Euros are behind us, we can shift our focus on the next major tournament that will be happening next year – The 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Nations in action this weekend are sure to provide their fans with the ultimate excitement when watching them. Some of them will be looking to end the Euros hangover and start with a win, and others will be looking to make their mark and surprise a few people.
Nevertheless, we are sure to get some interesting football, which will be more than capable of replacing the club Championships, and here we’ll take a look at how we think some of the games during the weekend will pan out.
Netherlands vs Montenegro
The Netherlands is one of the teams that have a point to prove after their poor Euros campaign. They have a new manager on board, and players will surely be motivated to prove the doubters wrong. They will be boosted by the return of talisman Virgil van Dijk, whose absence was missed during the Euro campaign in the summer.
Montenegro goes into this game with a mixed form, having won 2, lost 2, and drawn 1 in their last five games. These are teams that have never played against each other previously, so there isn’t much history to be discussed here. Montenegro has a good team, but the Dutch will be too strong for them, especially at home.
Score Prediction: Netherlands 3-0 Montenegro (6/1 with Bet Victor)
Latvia vs Norway
A game from the same group as the previous match, Norway will be looking to finish at one of the top two spots in the group and guarantee themselves a place at the World Cup. They won’t have an easy task, but they are expected to win games such as this one.
Latvia are the outsiders in this game, and they concede way too many goals, and the last time they kept a clean sheet was in a 5-0 win at Andorra back in November 2020. Erling Haaland will be rubbing his hands for this one, and Norway is fully expected to go home with the full 3 points.
Score Prediction: Latvia 0-4 Norway (12/1 with bet365)
Ukraine vs France
One of the games to look forward to this weekend, as both of these teams will be looking to claim the points in a group where they are the clear favourites. Ukraine surprised many with their performances at the Euro 2020 campaign, and they will be full of confidence going into this game.
France had a disappointing campaign, and they will be looking to bounce back, just like the big teams always do. Their team is full of stars, and now that the summer transfer window is over, some of their players can fully focus on their football duties. The last game between these two finished as a 1-1 draw, but we back the French to just edge this one.
Score Prediction: Ukraine 1-2 France (15/2 with William Hill)
Slovakia vs Croatia
This is a game that traditionally brings goals, so we can look forward to another exciting game between these two on Saturday. Slovakia had an early exit in the Euros, and Croatia were eliminated by Spain. There is a change of generation going on at the Croatian national team, and it will take some time before we see them back to their brilliant best.
Slovakia has never won against Croatia, managing to get two draws and four defeats in the six games they have previously played. This is a hard one to predict, and it can go either way, so we will go for a draw.
Score Prediction: Slovakia 1-1 Croatia (15/2 with MansionBet)
Israel vs Austria
This is another game that we can look forward to if we have the previous encounters in mind. Both of these teams play good, offensive football, and they seem to be getting results for it. Both are locked on 4 points at the moment, so a win here will be significant to any nation.
Austria has never won an away game against Israel, drawing two and losing two in the four games they played against each other so far, but we expect them to edge this one out, as their team looks better at the moment.
Score Prediction: Israel 2-3 Austria (37/1 with SBK)
Iceland vs North Macedonia
This is a game of two nations that have had mixed results recently, but as time goes on they seem to get better. Iceland has won just one game of their group out of possible three and they desperately need points here to keep their hopes of World Cup qualification alive.
North Macedonia, on the other hand, are fresh from their first-ever major tournament, so they will be hungry for another one. They have managed to beat Germany away in the previous qualifier, so we back them to bag another away win, and keep their dream alive.
Score Prediction: Iceland 0-1 North Macedonia (9/1 with Paddy Power)
Switzerland vs Italy
Both teams will be hopeful of claiming the points in this one. Switzerland is on a good run, and they seem to be on the rise, while Italy will go into this game fresh from being crown Euro champions. Italy has won just once away at Switzerland, and it came back in 2003.
The last three games these teams played in Switzerland finished with a draw, but Italy should have too much for the Swiss this time around. They will be full of confidence from their Euro win, so Italy is clear favourites here.
Score Prediction: Switzerland 1-3 Italy (16/1 with bet365)
Germany vs Armenia
The Germans need to turn a new page in their football history. Head coach Joachim Low has left the team, and it seems he has done it at the right time. Germany seems to be going backwards in recent years, and their poor Euro campaign proved it.
They have suffered a shock defeat at home to North Macedonia in the last qualifying match, so they need to get back to winning days against Armenia. The Armenians are not to be underestimated as they have won all three games so far in the World Cup Qualifiers, and they sit on top of the group. However, Germany should be able to get the job done on Sunday.
Score Prediction: Germany 3-0 Armenia (6/1 with Bet Victor)
England vs Andorra
A game which has one clear favourite, England are one of the nations to look out for when the World Cup begins next year. This will be a good game for Gareth Southgate to rotate his team and try out different formations.
Andorra hasn’t won a game since October 2019, so there is only one winner we can predict here. It should be a comfortable night for the England team and expect some of the debutants to bag a goal on Sunday.
Score Prediction: England 5-0 Andorra (7/1 with Paddy Power)
Belgium vs Czech Republic
Belgium is a team that seems to be underachieving at every major tournament they have been to in the last 10 years. This may well be the last chance for this generation to make their mark and prove why some of their players are considered to be among the best in the world.
However, they are up against a lively Czech Republic team, who has shown during the summer that they should not be underestimated. They also play good, attacking football, so this should be a very exciting game to watch for the neutrals. Belgium will have too much for the Czechs however this time.
Score Prediction: Belgium 3-1 Czech Republic (12/1 with SBK)
