Del Mar Breeders Cup 2025 Race by Race Preview & Picks

9:45 Del Mar – Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (Grade 1) (2yo) (Turf) (2yo) 5f

Wesley Ward has a good record in this contest, and SCHWARZENEGGER (7/1) could be the way to go in a competitive contest where Aidan O’Brien saddles three runners.

The lightly raced Not This Time colt stepped up on a highly promising Saratoga debut to get off the mark at the second attempt at Keeneland earlier in the month, showing a good attitude in knuckling down for the win over Obliteration, and there is surely better to come from him.

Purchased for just short of $1,000,000 as a yearling, he is drawn towards the outer, which may not be the best position given he helped to set the pace last time, and it may be a little trickier this time around to do the same from his starting stall position.

However, he is thoroughly unexposed and proved fast ground to be no problem last time out. A big performance wouldn’t come as a surprise with further improvement anticipated.

10:25 Del Mar – NetJets Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (Grade 1) (2yo Fillies) (Main Track) (Dirt) (2yo) 1m½f

BOTTLE OF ROUGE (7/2) has won here the last twice and Bob Baffert’s charge can bring up her hat-trick.

The Vino Rosso filly saw off reopposing Explora to land the Grade One Debutante Stakes here in September, scoring a shade cosily, and this further step in distance can unlock even more improvement.

Proven on the track and surface, she could prove a tough nut to crack despite this being her toughest test to date in her short career. Nevertheless, she ought to go well, and no surprise if she were to collect this big payday for connections.

11:05 Del Mar – John Deere Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (Grade 1) (2yo Fillies) (Turf) (2yo) 1m

Aidan O’Brien has won two of the last three renewals of this Grade One prize, and the Ballydoyle maestro could add to his tally with PRECISE (6/5), who has gone from strength to strength this term, and the Starspangledbanner filly has won her last four starts.

Beaten on her racecourse debut, she has quickly developed into a top-class performer, most recently beating Venetian Lace on her first try at one mile at Newmarket earlier in the month, where she ran out a comfortable winner in the Fillies’ Mile.

That race was run at a time just outside the two-year-old course record, and the Irish challenger turned in a top-quality performance to rout her rivals. That run sets a solid standard for the others to aim at, and still with further improvement to come, she could prove a tough nut to crack.

11:45 Del Mar – Fanduel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (Grade 1)(2yo C&G)(Dirt) (2yo) 1m½f

TED NOFFEY (10/11) is unbeaten in three runs, and Todd Pletcher’s charge can keep his perfect record intact here.

The Into Mischief colt should have little problem with this extended mile, given how he finished off his race at Keeneland last time, beating reopposing Blackout Time, and on that performance, he ought to confirm places with Kenneth McPeek’s rival, who proved no match.

He had previously beaten Buetane at Saratoga to open his Grade One account in the Hopeful Stakes, and there is certainly better still to come. He is likely to prove hard to beat in pursuit of a four-timer, and he sets a good standard, so every chance he adds further glory to his CV here.

12:25 Del Mar – Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (Grade 1) (2yo Colts & Geldings) (Turf) (2yo) 1m

Gstaad has hit the crossbar in each of his last three starts, including the Dewhurst when last seen out, and Aidan O’Brien’s charge sets a stiff standard as the trainer bids to win this race for the fourth successive year.

However, he steps up in trip here and so could come off second-best again, taking on unbeaten HEY NAY NAY (14/1), who is 3-3 and John Sadler’s charge can land a fourth career success.

A course-winner in September, this is a step up in class for him; however, he’s improved markedly in every run and his progress isn’t likely to have hit a ceiling yet, so there’s every chance he still has significant improvement to come.

He gave weight and a beating to some useful rivals in Grade Three company last time, and the form of that victory was done little harm when the runner-up finished a good third in the American Pharoah Stakes next time.

Proven at this venue on fast ground, he can find further improvement and despite his likely big price he can go close here.
