Del Mar is again the scene for more top-class racing, and the day two card features no less than nine Grade One races featuring the best horses from around the globe. As with day one, we’ve taken a look through all nine Grade One contests and made our picks and predictions for each race.

7:00 Del Mar – PNC Bank Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (Grade 1) (3yo+ Fillies & Mares) (Main Track) (Dirt) (3yo+) 7f
HOPE ROAD (11/2) could prove the answer, and the Quality Road filly can strike again.
Formerly with John Sadler, she has improved markedly for the switch to Bob Baffert, for whom she won her first four starts, including three here at distances up to one mile. Despite meeting with defeat in each of her next four outings, she ran well nonetheless and continued to make the frame before taking a Grade One at Saratoga when last seen.
She won that race a shade cosily, although holes can be picked in that form. Nevertheless, back on this track, she should continue to make her presence felt and a big run won’t come as a surprise.
7:41 Del Mar – Prevagen Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (Grade 1) (3yo+) (Turf) (3yo+) 5f
AG BULLET (5/1) was run down late in this contest twelve months ago and it might be worth chancing Richard Baltas’ charge to gain some compensation, given she arrives at the top of his game.
The Twirrling Candy mare faded into third, but she was only beaten a half-length and she filled the same position over one mile here on her next start in the Grade One Matriarch Stakes.
She has won her last two starts, taking the Grade One Jaipur Stakes at Saratoga and doubling up in a Grade Two latest at Kentucky Downs. This is tougher, but the runner-up franked the form by winnng a Grade One next time and she can go well here.
8:21 Del Mar – Cygames Breeders’ Cup Sprint (Grade 1) (3yo+) (Main Track) (Dirt) (3yo+) 6f
IMAGINATION (9/2) returned from eight months off to end an 18-month losing streak and Bob Baffert’s charge can strike again.
The Into Mischief colt saw off reopposing Dr Venkman and Straight No Chaser at Santa Anita last month to take the Grade Two Santa Anita Sprint, albeit in receipt of weight from both.
Swooping late off a strong pace, he appeared to win with something in hand and likely to be sharper now with that run under his belt, he should remain competitive and every chance he’ll be in the thick of the action once again.
9:01 Del Mar – Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff (Grade 1) (3yo+ Fillies & Mares) (Main Track) (Dirt) (3yo+) 1m1f
CLICQUOT (10/1) is on a roll with wins in her last four starts, and the Quality Road filly can keep her hot streak going to bring up a five-timer.
Brendan Walsh’s charge is fully effective at this distance, and she returned from a couple of months off to see off Dry Powder by a neck to land the Grade One Cotillion Stakes. She dug deep for that victory, having pulled hard throughout, but it was another forward step and there’s likely still more in the tank to come.
This will prove a tougher test of her credentials, but she has looked progressive and she can find further improvement to take a hand in the finish under Flavien Prat.
9:41 Del Mar – Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf (Grade 1) (3yo+) (Turf) (3yo+) 1m4f
MINNIE HAUK (6/5) can quickly get back to winning ways following her narrow defeat in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe for Aidan O’Brien.
The Frankel filly had won her previous five starts, which includes the Epsom Oaks, Irish Oaks and Yorkshire Oaks, and the testing ground at Longchamp may have been a contributing factor to her defeat when last seen.
She only succumbed by a head however, with the rest beaten five lengths and more and back on a less testing surface, she can quickly bounce back, assuming her exertions in France and the travel don’t have any adverse effect.
10:25 Del Mar – Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic (Grade 1) (3yo+) (Main Track) (Dirt) (3yo+) 1m2f
The loss of Sovereignty from the race robs the contest of a little sparkle, but SIERRA LEONE (3/1) can take advantage of that one’s absence to get back on the scoresheet.
Chad Brown’s charge took this prize twelve months ago and the Gun Runner colt has continued to run well in defeat, making the frame in Grade Ones at Faira Grounds and Churchill Downs before resuming winnng ways with a defeat of Highland Falls at Saratoga in the Grade One Whitney Stakes.
He met with defeat back there in the Grade One Jockey Club Gold Cup, but he wasn’t suited by how that race panned out and he’ll likely find this contest is run more to his liking. It wouldn’t come a huge shock to see him competitive again and he can defend his crown.
11:05 Del Mar – Fanduel Breeders’ Cup Mile presented by PDJF (Grade 1) (3yo+) (Turf) (3yo+) 1m
It might be worth chancing JOHANNES (11/1) to go one better than twelve months ago and on the back of a last-time success, the Nyquist horse can go in again.
Tim Yakteen’s charge was beaten less than one length in this contest last year before quickly resuming winning ways at Santa Anita in a Grade Two and he was better for his reappearance at Saratoga when readily taking the City Of Hope Mile back at Santa Anita latest.
He trod a similar path last year, winning that same race prior to taking his chance in this, and another big run could be on the cards.
11:45 Del Mar – Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (Grade 1) (3yo+) (Main Track) (Dirt) (3yo+) 1m
Course and distance winner NYSOS (7/4) is on a hat-trick and Bob Baffert’s charge can duly oblige punters by landing his three-timer.
The Nyquist colt has only tasted defeat once in the last six starts, which came in the mud at Churchill Downs back in May, but he’s since taken a Grade Three at Santa Anita and more recently struck in a Grade Two handicap here in July, where he beat Mirahmadi.
That form may not be anything special, but he comes here in excellent heart and still with improvement to come he can take another step up the ladder to land a first Grade One prize.
12:25 Del Mar – Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (Grade 1) (3yo+ Fillies & Mares) (Turf) (3yo+) 1m3f
SHE FEELS PRETTY (5/1) has a wide draw to overcome, but the Karakontie filly arrives at the top of her game having won three of her last four starts and Cherie Devaux’s charge can continue her good form.
Victories at Churchill Downs and Saratoga were tempered by a defeat back at Saratoga on the dirt track; but she quickly regained the winning thread at Woodbine latest when readily beating Diamond Rain despite the narrow margin of victory.
Her last two wins have come in Grade One company and while she appears better on turf than dirt she has shown this surface to hold no fears; while she’s also shown she can go well when fresh. Another big run could be on the cards and she ought to go close despite her draw.
